Palestine: marriage during WW2
« on: Saturday 03 January 15 10:50 GMT (UK) »
I would like to find details of a marriage that took place in Palestine (Tel Aviv) in 1942 between an Australian soldier and a woman from Tel Aviv. All I have is an Australian military record stating that the marriage took place but I would like to know more about the woman involved. Any information on where to search would be appreciated.

Have you located the soldier in the Australian Electoral Rolls post-war? They are available on Ancestry - and would also indicate whether the wife followed him back to Australia.
Secondly, his military records might have some more information - are they online yet (if I remember rightly some but not all 1939-45 service records are digitised on the Archives Australia website).
Third route is to use Trove to search Australian newspapers - many are now digitised for the relevant date and there might be a family announcement.
Fourth approach might be a religious one - were they both Jews and could you therefore have a look via relevant synagogues in Australia, which perhaps you could find via the electoral rolls?
All of these just ideas based on some of my research (none of which has involved Palestine marriages!) - best of luck

"I am searching for information about a woman who married an Australian soldier in Tel Aviv in March 1942. I have a copy of a telegram  identifying her as 299071 A.C.W2, LePage, Eva J. I don't know what these numbers or letters mean. I believe she was a local woman as her address was  in Tel Aviv. I would like to know if she was in the military and how to search for her."

ACW2 = Aircraftwoman Second Class in the W.A.A.F. = Womens Auxilliary Air Force i.e. the equivalent rank to a Private in the Army...299071 is her W.A.A.F. service number

Lepage (or Le Page) was her married surname,...her maiden surname was Schiller, the LePage surname is entered on the marriage registration index ledger page as Le Page.

Their marriage registration, which is listed below, was notified to the U.K. General Register Office (GRO) via the British Consulate in Jaffa, and Jaffa is a part of Tel Aviv, and because they have a British marriage registration at least one of them must have been a British national.

You can get a paper copy of their marriage certificate from the U.K. GRO for about £10 plus postage.

A tip for you fmlindsay, and for anyone else who posts enquiry messages like this, if you post more than one related thread, don't include information in one thread but omit it from any related threads, because that isn't likely to be as potentially productive as including all of the information in all of the related threads might be.

Eva Schiller married James LePage , an Australian soldier in 1942 in Jaffa. She remained in Palestine when he was sent back to Australia in1943. I believe she had a child. I am trying to find out what happened to her and the child. She was reported as very ill in 1946 in a telegram sent to James LePage in Australia.

Hi, yes, my aunt got very sick at end of the war, my father told me that she was brought back to Romania with a military airplane, I know she waited for her husband to come for her or contact her, but she got no news from him, than as communisms came to Romania and her fathers bank was confiscated by the comunists she and her parents emigrated to Israel and lived in Haifa.

Hi, regarding Eva LePage (Schiller). Her husband James LePage was returned to Australia by the Army in 1943 and served time in prison. Do you know if Eva had a child as she was pregnant when they were married. As far as I know he was unable contact her again. It is certainly a very sad story.
