Maybe this is a clue.

There was a Thomas baptised in Flixton in 1821, his parents were James Shawcross [occupation butcher] and Mary Irlam. And the reason that the mothers maiden name was on the baptism is that they did not marry till 1823.

So maybe Hannah was illegitimate too, although if that was an issue why did Thomas get baptised?
