The minimum age for the Militia was 17, and 18 for the Regular army. If you ignore Boys of which there were very few.

That narrows down the years he would have been in the militia given he was 20 when he joined the regular army. Also as he had to be living in Devon at the time of joining the militia that will help in searching for his Devon abode, hopefully with his parents at the time??

I have my army lists packed away. The rule about living in the county of a Militia a recruit wished to join certainly applied to the infantry. I would need to check the area covered by the Devon Artillery Militia. I have seen them called the Devon and Cornwall Miners Militia. If there was no Artillery Militia in Somerset recruits from that county may have been able to also enlist.

I also have a Militia regulations from the 1880s somewhere.

Interesting thought that if there was no militia in Somerset he might have been allowed to join the neighbouring county militia. The plot thickens!!
