Death Certificate Details
« on: Monday 05 January 15 16:31 GMT (UK) »
Not sure if this is the correct area to post this question but here goes.

I have in the past ordered a select number of death certificates but now researching WW1 from this area I need to find details for about 50 or so people and didn't want to shell out £9 each if I can help it.

Does anyone know if there is a central or county repository that can be visisted to view them? The vast majority are here in Leicestershire.

Cheers

You have to pay per certificate and there is no volume discount.

Short answer, no.

What particular information were you hoping to get from the certificates?
I was just thinking that if it were cause-of-death  from (say) influenza, would there have been a list of casualties/death notices in the local paper(s)?

As Pauline says, depends what info you are looking for?

Try probate records which will give accurate dates of death

Try churchyard and cemetery records for dates of burial and work backwards 3-5 days for aprox dates of death

Many thanks all, I suspected as much.

I know on more recent certificates they list former occupation but on earlier ones I'm after what they died of, especially those in the 20's and 30's who were still young when they died and wondered if they were Poison Gas victims.

Some of the more notable men do get an obituary in the local newpapers but many were just 'ordinary' men (if you can call risking your neck for King and Country ordinary) and I'm trying to contact decendants to see if they want to help, so I'll pursue those angles first and then try and fill the gaps with certificates afterwards.

Hi VicInIbstock,

I can't help you with the certs you need but my GGGrandfather died in 1927 aged 42.  His death cert has cause of death as influenza/pneumonia but it's only through family memories that we know he was gassed during WWI as there is no mention of it on his cert.

Many thanks for the insight Fiona.

My own grandfather was gassed and died earlier than maybe ought but at least he reached the age of 68, I've come across a half dozen local chaps that died in the late thirties or early forties (my objective is to get their story out to a wider audience). But then around here so many returned to go back down the mines which couldn't have helped their situation and was certainly a factor with my grandfather.

I have the same situation with my own maternal grandfather. His death certificate says the cause of death was tuberculosis, but I have been told he contracted it from having weaker lungs after being gassed in WW I. He survived until 1935.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.
