Where did William Henry Heyme go?
« on: Monday 05 January 15 19:26 GMT (UK) »
I have hit something of a brickwall with the family of William Henry Heyme and could do with some help

He is shown living in Gweek (Cornwall) in the 1851 census with with his father Gilbert, William H Heyme age 28 Lathmaker. His wife is Maria Heyme age 27 who was born in Falmouth. A dress maker.

After that William Henry and his wife just disappear off the planet! I have tried the census with various variations of the name Heyme ... but nothing. Perhaps they emigrated but haven't found any clues as to where they could have gone.

Anybody any ideas?

found his baptism in Falmouth in 1822  -  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N5DV-NSM
there is a marriage in Falmouth in 1847 with a possible match to a Hannah Maria Keer
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2643-NLD
is Maria in 1851 census Hannah Maria Keer ??...if so - could she be Hannah in later census returns ??

Just with a quick search of Freecen and FreeBMD, it does look likely that your couple emigrated. Who is the John Heyme in the 1861 census though?
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

No death records for any Heyme in South Australia, Queensland, or New South Wales. I'll check spelling variations.

Also was he in the Merchant Navy?
WILLIAM Heyme
Merchant Navy Seamen 1845
Birth Year 1821
Series BT113

There was a Heyme from Australia killed in WW2 his name sparked my interest GILBERT THOMAS HEYME, son of James and Elizabeth Heyme, of 136, Geelong Rd., Footscray, Victoria, Australia (unknown if related)
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)

that looks a good find to me because the father of William Henry Heyme b 1822 was Gilbert Heyme ....so it is possible that Gilbert Thomas Heyme is a descendant ....Gilbert as a christian name may have been passed down in the family ....

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a William Heyme emigrating to Victoria. There is a James, and a "J", in the unassisted emigrants, and none in the assisted list.

Thanks so much for all the ideas and suggestions.

one thing that doesn't make the Heyme family  easy to research is the enormous variations in Spelling!!! William Heyme apparently was in the merchant seamens register because he was a fisherman. There were over 200 pilchard boats working out of Gweek in the mid 19th century.

I have just been informed that there was a William Henry Heyme that died at Garlick? near Trentham Victoria Australia 16 April 1894. Not sure where to go from there but have my fingers crossed that this is the solution to the mystery :)

Try posting a query on the Australia board about the 1894 death. Add a link to this thread so people don't search unnecessarily.
