George Family, Halkirk and Latheron 1840 to ? Completed with thanks
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Please can I ask for help with this search:

I am trying to locate the whereabouts of the following family between 1840 (in Latheron parish) and 1864(in Woods Point and then Geelong, Australia).  I've checked the online 1841-51 censuses but can't find any probables. I can't find any deaths for parents. I know about the clearances/emigration from the area at that time and before.

Parents - John George and Christian McKay of ?Fermsdale, Halkirk. They married  9th March 1827, Halkirk
Had the following children bpt:

Halkirk:
baptism dates
4 August 1828  Catharine
20 January 1830  Janet
8 December 1831  William
25 December 1833 Sinclair
Parents of Deal/Dale

Latheron
birth dates
7 December 1835 Donald
2 April 1838  Margaret
21 March 1840 Elizabeth
Parents of Rangag

Donald, Margaret and Elizabeth were  entered in the register consecutively in 1840 but no baptism date given just their birth date.

William married one of my ancesters in 1864 in Geelong. On Margaret's death cert (Whithorn, 1898), William is described as a mining prospector.

From information in online listings and newspaper reports in New Zealand, I have established that not only William but also Sinclair and 3 sisters emigrated - probably to Australia and then to NZ. William and Sinclair died in 1913 in New Zealand. Donald might also emigrated but I have  only a possible on a ships list. For further details, see this thread : http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=708953.0

Thanks in anticipation.

Suggest you try searching under the surname Georgeson in 1841 census as there is a likely family at Rangag in that year. The names of the children seem to match. Your ancestor William may be with a family in Halkirk called McKay.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Thanks William - might use up some SP credits on that one.  I did notice the Mckay one and wondered  :-\   Just discovered that  Sinclair and Donald married Victoria in 1862, two years before William.

Just to add that the family may be listed as Georgson in the 1851 census. The children's names match but ages slightly out. Address Rangag. Again William does not seem to be present.

Yes, Skoosh - thanks very much. I checked up on the map at the weekend.  They lived in both parishes - first Halkirk and then Latheron.
