Henry WHITE- Preston late 18th century
« on: Tuesday 06 January 15 15:42 GMT (UK) »
Henry WHITE married Elizabeth BROWN in Preston in January 1788 (by banns)
He appears to have been born ca 1762 being buried in Weymouth 25 March 1832  but the couple only had one child baptised in Preston

Any clues on where he came from?

There are a number of possible Henry's born in the area of Preston, Dorset 1760 - 1764 on family search. It may be difficult to prove the link with such a common name.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Hi there

On Dorset OPC there seems to be baptisms for 5 children in Preston with parents Henry and Elizabeth

Robert 1789
Stephen and Mary 1790
Thos. 1795
Susannah 1797

Also 23 Feb 1800 there is a burial of a Henry son of Henry White, so possibly another child?

Henry White was also buried in Preston 25 Mar 1832 aged 70, abode Weymouth and likely Henry's wife Elizabeth buried Preston 13 Jan 1800 a month before that son named above.

Thank you. I meant to say that Elizabeth was apparently the only daughter of Robert Brown & Mary. I had spotted the baptisms of Robert's siblings. I was really thinking about where Henry might have come from.

In addition to the other data you spotted
Stephen White buried 27 Nov 1814 Weymouth age 22
Susannah White married Edward Elliot at Preston 3 Nov 1818

... and likely Henry's wife Elizabeth buried Preston 13 Jan 1800 a month before that son named above.

The burial entry says '  son of Henry, widower' which makes the connection almost certain.

Just before the burial entry for Henry in 1832 is an entry for a Robert White, 76, who also lived in Weymouth but was buried in Preston. As Henry called his eldest son Robert, they may both be children of another Robert, although White is a common name.

Henry and Elizabeth both signed the marriage register, so are both literate. One of the witnesses was a regular, but the other, John Puckett, may be connected.

I wondered whether Henry married again, particularly as he had young children. There is a Henry White, widower, who marries Jane Langdown in Bere Regis in 1812; but he was a carpenter who died intestate in 1828 with a related administration in 1833.

Some time ago there was someone else looking at the same family:
