Hi Bob

There were no Marriage Certificates before the mid 1850s.  There might be an OPR (Old Parish Register) entry, depending what religion they were.

I've had a quick look, and don't see anything.

Do you have a rough idea of their ages, from the 1841 census for example? Or any idea of which parish they came from? The names of their children might also help you pick out the more likely parents, if William and Margaret followed the traditional Scottish naming pattern.

Hi,
I think that William was born in Kirkwall in 1776 and Margaret was born in Holm & Paplay ( census 1841 Caithness aged 70 ) in 1771.Can't find birth cert to verify this. On there children birth certs Garioch is spelled with one R.

Is it the Margaret Manson in Halkirk, Caithness, aged 70, that you are referring to? From what I can see in online transcripts, she was born in Caithness (Ancestry gives the wrong parish name - no 37 is Halkirk, not Dunnet). There is another Margaret in Bower but she is also Caithness born and is listed with a male who may be a husband (see Freecen)

With children's names, I was meaning first names - they can sometimes give a clue to the names of grandparents and other relatives. See http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?561 for guidance

Hi Guys,
Thanx for the help.
The details that I have so far are ,
Margaret Garioch pos born in Holm & Paplay  on 13/01/1771 as per ancestry can't find on cert.
William Manson born 1/5/1776 as per Scotlandspeople.
There first sibling was Margaret born 1796 in Holm & Paplay but died as another Margaret born 1806.
So the marriage cert  must be around 1796 .

Regards
 Bob

Perhaps consider that the marriage registers/records just don't exist.....

Have a look at the list of extant OPRs for Orkney and dates here:

http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/list-of-oprs/list-of-oprs-1-56.pdf

No marriages for Holm & Paplay or Kirkwall (the two parishes you mention) around that date. :(

There might be some information in the Kirk Sessions records, but they are not available online  :-\
