India 1861
« on: Tuesday 13 January 15 18:42 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie, so I hope this post is ok! Can anyone please help me with this question:
Arthur Champion (b 1835, Ireland) was a Sergeant with the 13th Brigade, Royal Artillery in India 1861. His wife (Elizabeth) had a son named Charles Frederick Champion on 1 Jan 1861. Census records show that as 'Bombay', but family tradition says it was Poona (now Pune). I need to know more detail of when and if the 13th Brigade were stationed in Poona at the time, find a birth/baptism for Charles Frederick if possible, and know when the 13th returned to the UK. Anyone give me a guide on where to look for this info?
Thanks
Cabbri

Wow - thanks guys for all the swift replies, and for clearing up his actual birth date. I found the record! The interesting part of this story is that Charles Frederick Champion changed his name completely between 1871 and 1881 when he enlisted into the RMLI as William John Blake. He named his son after his own real first names (CF) and then added Champion back in as his middle name on the 1911 census. Be fascinating to find out why the change! :)
Anyone know when the 13th Brigade returned to England? This would just fill in some other details...
Thanks again.

It is an excellent, free site.
