Thomas Sutton born 1824 in Manchester

I have a dilemma with my great,great grandfather - Thomas Sutton.

He was born in 1824 and from Manchester, as stated on all the census he was registered on.

He died in 1883 and is buried in Philips Park Cemetery.

He married Martha Eyre 1845 in Manchester, and had eight children.

I cannot trace his parents !!!!

I cannot trace her parents !!!!

The family belief was that he was from Hebden Bridge and came to Manchester to start his line of Booksellers, of which the trade was continued amongst his sons.

Do you have a copy of his marriage certificate?  His father is shown as Robert Sutton, a fustian cutter.

Possible baptism:

Thomas, son of Robert and Susannah Sutton. Robert shown as fustian cutter.  11 July 1824, Manchester.

This appears to be a Robert Sutton in 1841 but with wife Sarah. his occ. is fustian cutter. No Thomas with him.

The info of his marriage to Martha Eyre is registered July - Aug - Sept 1845, page 0724, volume 20, being married at Manchester Cathedral.

His father being a Fustian Cutter rings true.

A witness to the marriage is Ellen Sutton.

1846 marriage of Ellen Sutton and John Howarth. Her father is Robert, a Fustian Cutter.
Her address is Angel Street which fits with a 12 yr old Ellen living there in 1841 in the household of John Oldham.

There is a marriage in 1851 - Robert Sutton, whitesmith, to Elizabeth Henshaw. Father's details are the same and the address is Fennel Street.
This fits with the 1851 which Jim found earlier.

There's a death for Robert Eyers 11/8/1833 aged 51. Occ. fustian cutter.

Robert Sutton Bapt. 27/9/1789 Sefton (as per census). Parents Thomas & Mary Sutton.
According to his marriage to Mary Ormisher 1/6/1789 Sefton, Thomas was a shoemaker.
Robert Sutton married Susannah Bentley 25/5/1816 Mancs. Cathedral. Occ. fustian cutter.

With regard to the Suttons, there are children baptised with parents Robert and Susannah and also Robert and Sarah.
They overlap in birth years so there are either two families or she changes her name around.
