James Waddell 8th Laird of Balquhatstone
« on: Friday 16 January 15 21:03 GMT (UK) »
James Waddell 8th Laird of Balquhatstone was born 1767 to George Waddell/ Margaret Scot. He married Christian Cowbrough about 1792. They had a son George 1793-1859 who first married Jean Aitken 1818, then Elizabeth Gardner 1828. George was a surgeon in Falkirk and he died of an accidental drowning in the Forth & Clyde canal in 1859. In the 1841 census, George is noted to be a surgeon in Falkirk, age 49, with his wife Elizabeth Gardner and family. However, there is another George Waddell in the 1841 census, age 50,  at Balquhatsone with Sibbald Watt 50, (servant) & Archibald Chapman 12 (servant). Does anyone know who this might be?

Could this connect to George Waddell:

We now need to follow down the first of two collateral Waddell Connections ultimately uniting to produce George Waddell 2nd of Balmuzier & Ballochney, born in 1788, who was the purchaser of Balquhatstone from his third cousin (once removed) James Waddell 9th of Balquhatstone, born in 1767 and thitherto the Laird of that estate.

Thank you for this information. After reviewing my notes a little further, I actually answered my own question. The George Waddell in question was born 1788 to George Waddell/ Janet Waddell and married to Elizabeth Gaston Ralston. In the 1841 census: George Waddell 50, independent, Balquhatston; Sibbald Watt 50 (female servant);    Archibald Chapman 12 (male servant).

Terrific information & photos! I actually drove into the lane at Balquhatstone when I was visiting Slamannan a couple of years ago.

Glad you have those Georges sorted out. Your numbering seems to be slightly out - you have James as 8th of Balquhatstone, but he was, as far as I am aware, the 9th, and the last Waddell of Balquhatstone of the 1st line.

James was obliged to sell his ancestral estate; it went under the hammer at the Royal Exchange Coffee House, Edinburgh, on 15 July 1818. The buyer, and founder of the 2nd line of Waddell of Balquhatstone, was his 3rd cousin once removed; both were descended from George Waddell, 5th of Balquhatstone, and his wife Elizabeth Arthur. The second line still occupies the house, though as the estate passed on through a daughter the surname is no longer Waddell.

The buyer was also related through the family of his mother Janet Waddell, who was a Waddell of Stanrigg. The Stanrigg family are descended from the younger brother of George Waddell, 3rd of Balquhatstone, of the first line.

The Orna Verum web site is maintained by a descendant of the first line of Waddells of Balquhatstone, who works closely with other Waddell researchers, most notably Gavin Waddell, whose book The Waddells of Scotland was published in 2012.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
