Thank you, Jaywit! I found this link fascinating. All more evidence, though, that the Saunderses were living in Gloucester and being quite straightforward. I think I may have to settle for believing that their personalities were unusually charming and my mother was confused about their 'theatrical' lives...

As self employed musicians then as now they would take any job that was going.

These days often as session musicians on recordings etc.. In the 19th. century there was a huge amount of live music in theatres, music halls etc. so most of their work could have been in theatres and this could have rubbed off on them.

Is there a joke there about matches rubbing off ... OK that was feeble!

You make an excellent point. I will investigate musical life in Gloucester.

I believe I know about Alice, she was a daughter of my grandmothers sister Harriet and according to my late fathers cousin Alice was marred to John Jackson and I think we are related John Saunders was a musician he was a part time tutor to the children of Marquess of Salsbury. His father was also John Saunders and a musician. On reading about the colorful Saunders family I noticed my Great Grand mother Fanny was mentioned who marred Robert Head. I would love to be able to contact you and give you more info. I have a lot of info and photos. If you can please email me. I am in Qld Australia.

Hi Jan, I have only just seen your post. I am most intrigued by your information about Alice's husband John. You are quite right in that I now know he came from a family of musicians (women as well as men). His job in Gloucester was bugle-major to the Gloucester Regiment, which essentially meant he was in charge of the regiment's musicians. I have not previously heard about a connection to the Marquess of Salisbury. Alice's mother however was Fanny (presumably short for Frances) Maybury or Mabury, who was Irish. I would love to hear from you and see if we can find out where and if we connect -- please feel free to message me.
