POVEY
« on: Monday 26 January 15 05:21 GMT (UK) »
I am desparate, searching for I believe, William Howard Povey, or Howard William Povey.  Married to Elizabeth Hewitt.  I think his parents were James Povey, 1817-1876, and Elizabeth Phillipa Jennings, born 1817.  Further on I have a Martha Povey 1875 - 1923, Who I believe is the daughter of above William, or Howard Povey and Elizabeth Hewitt.

Martha Povey married my husbands Grandfather, Edward Charles Fleer.  Hopefully someone can help me with this.

mef, what location do you have for William Howard Povey and when do you think he was born? There are quite a few William H Povey named people in the records, so without a rough guide to birth date and location it's impossible to know which might be him.
AYRSHIRE - Strachan, McCrae, Haddow, Haggerty, Neilson, Alexander
ABERDEENSHIRE (Cruden and Longside) - Fraser, Hay, Logan, Hutcheon or Hutchison, Sangster
YORKSHIRE (Worsbrough) - Green, Oxley, Firth, Cox, Rock
YORKSHIRE (Royston and Carlton) - Senior, Simpson, Roydhouse, Hattersley

I would suggest that you purchase Martha's birth certificate in order to verify the parents.

I can see three birth registrations:

March 1874 - Birkenhead
March 1875 - Clifton
June 1876 - Birkenhead

A quick check on the index for 1881 census suggests:

1874 - John and Ann - born Birkenhead
1875 - Arthur and Hannah - born Bristol
1876 (shown as 1877) - Joseph and Sarah - born Birkenhead

According to an online tree which cites her birth and marriage records, Martha POVEY was born in Carlton, Victoria (AUS) on 7 April 1875, daughter of Elizabeth POVEY.  No father is named on the birth record, but when Martha married Edward Charles FLEER on 18 March 1895, her father's name was given as William HOWARD, grocer.

The same tree identifies Elizabeth POVEY as the daughter of James POVEY and Eliza Philippa JENNINGS mentioned above by garstonite.

Thank you Grandies and Manchester Rambler  :)  I was just about to ask whether we were talking about England/Wales, as I could find no reference to a marriage between Martha and Edward Charles Fleer.

Thank you all so much for your help.   I think my mistake was that I read William Howard and assumed the surname should be Povey, Cant assume anything it is so true.   Now I will revisit Martha Povey, and try and work back from there.  Maybe my James and Eliza are even wrong, I need to check further.  ? Am thnking Martha Povey was born to Elizabeth Hewitt, and Elizabeth didnt name the father.  Later the father is stated as William Howard.  I feel something is wrong and need to research this Martha Povey more closely.   If anyone can help I would love your input.  Thanks again, mef

Back again.  I have tried finding more out about my Martha Povey, with very little success.

I know she was born 1875, Carlton, vic to Elizabeth Hewitt.  No father is named.   I am wondering why the mother named her Povey, if she didn't want the father on the birth.   Then when she married Edward Charles Fleer, her father was stated as William Howard, but I could find no marriage between Elizabeth Hewitt and William Howard.

I don't know where else to look.  I searched the Victorian births, deaths and marriages, with no luck either.

Help please, mef
