Can anyone help with a passenger list for the EMMA EUGENIA which landed in Fremantle Western Australia on 25th May 1858.

In particular a passenger named Ellen Byrne(s) or Burns(s)

Miss Ellen Burns, English. Departed Plymouth, Arrived Fremantle, Emma Eugenia 1858 4th May. 28 years Nurse Middlesex Acc115/42

There is also Miss Julia Burns 18 years Servant Middlesex Acc115/42 traveling on the same ship. A sister perhaps?

My Ellen Byrnes (my great great grandmother) was born 15th May 1945 Holborn, London and was listed in the 1851 census at the Christchurch Workhouses Charles Street Mile End New Town with her elder sister Mary Ann b 1840 and elder brother b 1939. I'm guessing she came on the Emma Eugenia as her death cert shows her arriving 1858. According to "The Immigration of Domestic Servants to
Western Australia in the 1850s and 1890s" by Emily Jayne Chambers this ship brought around 130 single women and girls to be domestic servants for the Swan River Colony.
She married Jeremiah McGrath 1862, James Freeman 1868, John Nelson 1882 and John Bryant 1892 and died in 1910 Carnarvon WA.

many thanks for your help - - I will follow this lead up.

I wonder whether there could be 2 Ellens whose details are being mixed up here:

1
Ellen BURNS (d of James , sgt of Police). She is the widow of (unknown first name) McGRATH and arrives in Jan 1860 from South Australia (https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/66007999)
She marries James FREEMAN in 1868 and John Nicolas NELSON in 1882 (see e.g. https://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/F/F3039.jpg ; http://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/M/M2769.jpg ; http://slwa.wa.gov.au/data/wabi/N/N0360.jpg )

2.
Ellen BURNES b 1845 Middlesex, who arrives 24 Jun 1862 per the Mary Harrison (pas list: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSVT-D9Z3-Y?i=105).  She could be the Ellen Burns who married Jeremiah McGRATH in 1862.

Yes, I think Tree Spirit may be on a good track there.

If One Ellen Burns/McGrath arrived from South Australia as a widow in 1860, she cannot be the Ellen Burns/McGrath, widow, of Jeremiah McGrath as they did not marry until 1862 in South Australia with his death by accident being in 1865 there.

The Carnarvon death was for Mrs Bryant, who had certainly been at one time, Mrs Freeman.

I recently was contacted by a person in England who advised he was a provisional DNA match of myself. It appears the connection is through Ellen Byrnes b 1845 London and Mary Ann Byrnes b 1840 London.
I am undertaking further DNA testing to confirm. Confirmation would then suggest that Ellen Byrnes /Burns came to Australia in 1858 and given she was a pauper living in a working house in London its likely she came as part of the immigration of domestic servants scheme commenced in the 1850's.

Hi Sue,

The Informant was L Bird who I am sure was her daughter Lillian Freeman b oct 6 1869 Reg No 11859. Also known as "Aunt Lilly". Married Alfred Bird 1887 in Carnarvon.

I am glad to hear it was an actual family member.  Often it is not and one likes to think perhaps this helps somewhat with accuracy.
