Hello! Looking for George Stockport (b 1793)
« on: Friday 30 January 15 15:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi there everyone,

I am brand new to the forums here, looking forward to getting involved! I have been researching my tree using Ancestry and FindMyPast for about a month now, and I am finding out all sorts of great things about my ancestors, it's absolutely fascinating.

I have managed to trace some of my family back to the baptism of my 4th great grandfather George Stockport in 1793 (great to read the original record!). I then have a source for his wedding to Rachael in 1817, but after that I can find nothing at all relating to him in the 1841 census (possibly deceased) or a death record anywhere. I have a record for Rachael Stockport baptising her son John in 1834 but George is not mentioned here either. This makes me think George has passed away (or gone somewhere!) between 1829 (he is listed on their third childs baptism record) and 1834.

Of course, I'm such a beginner at this I am probably missing something really simple, but I would appreciate any help that anyone can offer  ;D

Thanks
Stefan

Hi, thanks for the response! Yes, that's probably an important piece of information ... George Stockport was baptised in Spittal, England (near Berwick-upon-Tweed), and was married to Rachel Helsop in 1817 in St Nicholas Church in Newcastle upon Tyne

Thanks
Stefan

Thankyou so much for the reply! As you say, I am convinced that Rachael remarried John Spowart sometime after the birth of her son, John, in 1834 as the census records match up really well. William Stockport is my great, um, great great Grandfather I think and another of her children. Her death record is something I didn't have so thankyou :)

It's interesting that you mentioned a couple of times alternate spellings for surnames - I hadn't considered that surnames might have changed, or altered from just one generation to the next in the 19th century - how concerned should I be, or how should I approach searching my ancestors if their surnames could change so easily (for example, you mention Rachel Stockford - but she married and became Rachel Stockport not a few years earlier. I have no doubt you have found the right record (John Spowart was her 2nd husband I think) but the surname changing is something that worries me for future research!)

Once again, thankyou guys so much for your replies and help, it's very exciting to be here and have your help with my research :)

Hi again Stefan, did George Stockport marry a Frances Richardson 21st July 1850, if so on 1851 census he is shown as George Stockford aged 23 b Walker residing in Houghton-le-Spring in 1851.
Census ref HO107/2393/311/4

Also was he the George Wallace Stockport baptised 17th February 1827 Father George Mother Rachel

PS and whose child is the Margaret Stockport aged 6 in 1851?

Thankyou for the reply Keyboard86! I am certain that the George Stockport I am looking for was born in 1793, married 1817. George Wallace Stockport is the son of "my" George and Rachel. I am going to guess that Margaret Stockport in 1851 is unrelated as Rachel would have been 45 when she was born and named Rachel Spowart

Thankyou so much for your help :-)

Hi again Stefan, I realise that George snr married Rachel, all I was asking is who did George Wallace Stockport marry, and as Margaret is shown as a Granddaughter to Rachel whose child is she? A birth registration or baptism would help?

Keyboard86

EDIT as the Margaret in 1851 is shown a Grandaughter to the Head of the household, I wonder if Margaret was incorrectly shown as a Stockport, and should be a Spowart?

Also the 1850 George Stockport marriage cannot be him along with the 1851 I posted as he is single and with Rachel in 1851 must have been tired that night!
