Where in the 1861 UK Census are they?

Hi. I haven't been here for a while.

I'm trying to find where my Cunningham family were before they travelled on the City of Brisbane in early 1862. 
Family was John (C) Cunningham [40], Hel(l)en Cunningham [34], David [11], John [10], Charles (Tait) [7 of Kirknewton, Midlothian] and Elizabeth [5 of Cambuslang, Lanarkshire]

John was employed as Telegraph Master and Pointsman for 7 yrs in Hamilton Junction, near Glasgow, Scotland.

the ship to Australia left Gravesend England. I don't even know how they got down there.

I'd given up on them being in Scotland because I hadn't found them.
(and I totally forgot about Alexander...)
I had wondered if they moved back to family around Kirkewton before they left. The son Charles named his House here in australia Kirkcaldy... so I'm still trying to find a connection there.

I have no idea about the geography of Scotland. Looking forward to my trip later in the year so I can put names to places, and distances between places.
I've only just come to know how close Edinburgh and Glasgow are.

Do enjoy your trip later in the year.    Looked for the family in 1851 and they either missed the census or are doing a good job of hiding
