Thanks JM, yes I have trawled the internet and seen these, but good try.  I am now looking at the earliest Ordinance Survey maps for Ross and Cromarty and think I will go to the NLS in Edinburgh to check out the oldest maps.

Another thought, often helps and a really useful feature of FreeCen www.freecen.org.uk/

Look for an entry you know is there in Inchrory in either/both 1841/1851. You can go back and forward households on the census for there, finding surrounding place names of areas and properties. This is very much the enumerator's "walk" and can help enormously in finding places on maps as you follow the clues from FreeCen place names!
