How to find a wife's surname 1760's
« on: Sunday 01 February 15 22:03 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone give me guidance please on how to discover my 4xg/grandfather's spouse's surname? He was Thomas Bright (b c1750?) and a watchmaker. I know this from his three son's birth certificates, and I know her first name was Anne, but the records don't show surnames. Where do I start?

Hi,

Was this England?  Can you tell us which part?

Hi Nell,

It was London, UK. Theson's names were Richard William Bright (b 1774), Thomas Owen Bright (b 1776) and George Benjamin Bright (b 1778), all baptised St Luke's Old Street, Finsbury. Father shown as Thomas and mother as Anne in the online records I can find. The only logical marriage date for a Thomas and Anne I can find is from Frant in Sussex where Thomas is shown as a watchmaker....

Hmm - so you have seen the actual parish register entries, only I can't find them at the moment  :-\

Nell

Edit - sorry - misread the name.  Will recheck  :-[

Soory Nell,

I've only seen the online records, not the actual Parish registers. Would I get anywhere by going to St Lukes's or the Metropolitan archives? Ancestry shows an FHL number, but I don't know how to access those.

Ok - found the baptisms - images are online.

The marriage - 1766 in Frant?  Thomas Bright & Ann Chatfield?  I can't see anything about Thomas being a watchmaker, but the index entry says he was from Speldhurst in Sussex.

I would have expected there to be some other children - if this is the same couple - baptised somewhere before 1774.  That's a gap of 8 years.

Any idea when Thomas died?

The original registers for St Luke's have been deposited at LMA and the images are available to view online.  A visit to either the parish or LMA might not necessarily help you.

It's actually Thomas Owen - the register has a bit of a problem on that page  ;)

Yes, 1766 was my only option. Sure he was shown somewhere as a watchmaker (can't put my hand on it right now, too late at night!). That's the only reason I went for that option, but I agree it seems a bit early, and I can't find children prior to 1774. My challenge is that I can only get as far as 'Anne'. I don't yet know Thomas' actual birth date, so can't really find a death date (I'll try), but I thought if I can find a definite marriage, that might shed light oh when Thomas was born and to whom.
How can I break this wall of no surname?
Thanks for your help, I'll check in the morning (off to bed now!)  :)

I agree Thomas Owen Bright (son of Thomas)
