Arthur Brannigan - born c.1836
« on: Monday 02 February 15 08:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Arthur Brannigan was probably born in County Monaghan circa 1836.

He married Alice (surname unknown) - and had the following children born in County Monaghan:

Patrick Brannigan - born c.1869;
James Brannigan - born c.1871;
Mary Brannigan - born c.1873.

Between 1873 and 1875 they moved to Northumberland, England and had 2 more children:

Catherine Brannigan - born c.1876;
Owen Brannigan - born c.1877 (the father of the famous opera singer - Owen Brannigan).

Can anybody find their origin in Monaghan - particularly Alice's surname and Arthurs' parents / grandparents?

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi again,

I have just found out that Arthur had a brother (also born in Ireland - circa 1838) called Terence Brannigan.

He died in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland in 1887.

Thanks,

Darin.

Hi aghadowey

Thanks for that

I have the census records for the family from 1881-1911, which gave me County Monaghan as birthplace.

If anybody can tell me the town, or anything else, that would be great

Thanks

Darin.

You'll need to see birth certificates to get an exact place of birth but the family could have lived in different locations in Ireland before moving to England.

The 1911 census (we aren't allowed to do lookups for it) often shows a more exact place of birth so it would be worth tracing all Irish born family members to that point (including the 1881 nephew) to see if you get any more clues.

Will do, thanks,

Is there any record of the marriage of Arthur Brannigan and Alice McNally?

Or a marriage for Terence Brannigan?

Or the birth of his son?

Thanks

Darin.

Civil registration of Catholic marriages began in 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic ones). You can use the civil registration index but for earlier marriages you need to try and find church records.

Here's an 1871 Castleblayney marriage for an Arthur Branigan
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FYSF-Y25
and one for an Alice McNally
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FYSC-26F

not only is the year a bit too late but they do not appear on the same page so looks like your couple may have been married in a Catholic ceremony pre-1864

"RootsIreland" has an 1867 Co. Monaghan church marriage for Arthur Brannigan and Alice McNally.

Edited to add: And a couple of the childrens' baptisms.
