Herd/McGhie families Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 03:44 GMT (UK) »
Read a post from tommacgregor dealing with Herd family dated 14 August 2008.  In the list of children was one Davidina Herd, Born 7 March 1854 at Wemyss.  My great grandmother was a Davidina McGhie nee Herd who was married on 9 April 1884 to William McGhie who was the United Free Church minister in Buckhaven.  Their eldest daughter, my grandmother was named Euphemia Jean, and one of Davidina's sisters was named Euphemia.  Also of note is my grandmother married a minister William Sutherland and my mother's first was also Davidina.  Would be grateful if tommacgregor could shed light on this.

I just had a quick look for you doesn't look like he has been online since 2009, so it might take him some time to reply.

Do you have " David HERD and Euphemia BURT. David and Euphemia were married on the 3rd March, 1846 at Wemyss in Fife. Euphemia was about 22 years old when she married David, having been b/chr. on 27th August, 1823."Her parents, William BURT and Christian KINNEAR"

"Children from the IGI
Christian (Christina?) Herd born 29th November, 1846 at Wemyss in Fife.
Jane Herd was born 9th January, 1850 at Wemyss.
Euphemia Herd was born 2nd April, 1851 at Wemyss.
Davidina Herd was born on 7th March, 1854 at Wemyss.
Isabella Herd was born on 19th September, 1856 at Wemyss.
Jemima Burt Herd was also born on 19th September, 1856 (I checked that again on the IGI, and yes, there is an extracted birth/chris. record).
William Herd born 28th January, 1859 at Wemyss.
David Herd born 15th October, 1864 at Wemyss"

"1881, and found this on the Census taken at Randolph Street at Wemyss

Mrs HERD        Head  Widow  Age 56  Seamstress b. Buckhaven.
Jane A. HERD  Daur    Unmarr Age 31                     b. Buckhaven.
Davidina HERD  "        Unmarr Age 26 Milliner         b. Buckhaven.
Jemima HERD    "        Unmarr Age 24 Milliner         b. Buckhaven.
Jemima J.K.Law Board     "      Age 24 Teacher       b. Montrose, Forfar"

*I have a David Herd in my family tree but he was born in 1766, it would be interesting to see where your Herd line leads to.
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

Many thanks for the info, that is what I had picked up from the post from tommacgregor .  Also noted that there was a William Herd, born 28 January 1959 at Wemyss. I have a photocopy of a letter written in 1905 from an A. Herd, whose husband was called Willie, (maybe the same William) from an address 77 Mitchell Street, Glebe (Australia). The letter was sent to my Grandmother Euphemia in which she was addressed as "my dear sister" and it mentions her children as being Archie, Norman, Bobbie, Leslie, Archie and Georgie the boys and Leila, Dorothy and Muriel the girls.  Maybe someone in OZ will recognise the names as being related.
