Hi and welcome Joseph Oliver was obviously born illegitimate... according to a tree online....his mother married a James Ball 1930 ...You could maybe order his birth certificate to see if fathers name is mentioned

Hi,

I can only find one birth registered Civil Registration in Durham 1920, this you can see for yourself on
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

December Q 1920 Durham, which covers a birth in September.  However this entry states
Mother's maiden name as Burrow.

Joseph may still be alive - so cannot post the results - unless you can confirm that he is
deceased.

There is a suitable birth Dec Q 1920 Easington Registration District giving mother's maiden name as Oliver.

Think you will find it impossible to know who the Father was, unless he was Bpt and the vicar
made a note in Parish Register - but not likely at this late date.

There is an identical situation in one of my Durham families with an illegitimate child born 1920 also in this district.

If the mother was unable to support herself and her child, she might try to claim financial assistance from the father
and there would be a hearing at the local magistrates court. Bastardy and maintenance orders for Easington Petty Sessions still exist, but are closed for 100 years.

However, if you can prove you are descended from the people concerned and that those directly involved are now dead, (by providing birth, marriage and death certificates),   the staff can do the research for you if you can pay.
The trouble is, there may be no info to find. I emailed  Durham county archivist at the weekend which is how I discovered this.
So do I wait 5 years or do I pay ?
