Ordering Certificate Query
« on: Tuesday 03 February 15 14:26 GMT (UK) »
I'm part way through ordering a marriage certificate for an ancestor with the surname "Dillon", however, on freeBMD his surname has been transcribed as "Dillan". When filling out the GRO form what should I put for the surname (if it makes any difference I know the index reference).

Thanks

Marley (Manchester, originally Ireland)
Hogan (Tullamore, County Offaly, Ireland)
Reekie (Fife)
Elston (Brecon, Birmingham, Dorset, Devon)
Pearsall (Birmingham)

Kinnaird (Fife)

I would put exactly what is on the index, if you are sure this is the right person you want.
The reference will match the spelling on the index and lead to the correct certificate (hopefully!)

Yes, write is exactly as it appears on the index or they may not issue the certificate.  :)

You can always check whether it is just a FreeBMD transcription error or not, by using the "spectacles" icon and then viewing the original GRO Index.  That will tell you whether the entry is Dillon or Dillan.   :)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for the advice. I had a closer look at the index using the spectacle button and has has indeed been written down as "Dillan". Certificate now on order!
