Now i have got muddled as to Your last message My reply is
In my previous list of sources supplied I hadn’t realised you are the same Edward/Eddie as helping Ros Davies, you didnt answer my queries about ‘more than one Archibald’ etc so I retired
this time I’m focusing for local history records
TAB

McBride, Henry-Townland: Portaferry Gardens Year: 1827-Ballyphilip-Down there are 315 entries for portaferry Gardens the Coates are living across the Strangford Lough just south of Strangford which might be seen as aneighbour if you can afford the ferryin Ballyculter, Saul is a bit further westwards
Coates, Fras.-Townland: Carrow Carlin Year: 1833-Saul-Down-
Coates, James-Townland: Ballyculter Year: 1833-Ballyculter-Down-

Tumulty, Andrew-Townland: Portaferry Gardens Year: 1827-Ballyphilip-Down
before I leave TAB the originals are in PRONI Belfast and I think their collection is being revised slowly so they may become digitalized like the 26 counties and may even list some of the extras eg any accompanying maps.  They have been closed re covid and maybe the same again currently but some staff are home working etc

Portaferry Gardens  on the 1st edition OS 6”map1830’s there is no mention of Portaferry Gardens  on the 1st ed Ist revision about 1863 still no mention of land named there is no mention of Portaferry Gardens, there is an area within Portaferry named Castle Garden just north of the Ferry Quay to Strangford
Portaferry Gardens its not listed in http://www.placenamesni.org/results.php
Portaferry Gardens its not listed in https://www.logainm.ie/en/130143?s=Portaferry
the parish Ardquin comes down into the nw of the town but I think a red herring

Griffiths valuation 1863 printed info
Map ref  17  65    Andrew McBride has Map ref  17  65    His address is the High Street presumably Portaferry. his landlord is William Murraythe homestead is described as ahouse and yard valued at £1 15shhillings pa round about the properties values soar  to several over £10 .
Map ref  17  82    I noticed no 82 being the home of Henry Tomalty with ho value £2 10 shillings pa however from No 83 onwards to the end of the road the valuation soar so that No 91 is astarch works with no land charges but is £36 pa
its Friday evening I cannot get the Griffiths maps to open, normally this take a few seconds to load  Then you can compare where the ref area to say a modern Sateilite image and find what has happened to the original building plot
I checked for existing McBride trees in
https://www.wikitree.com/genealogy/MACBRIDE nothing found
https://www.GenesReunited.co.uk/tree/results/mcbride?memberkey=0&yearofbirthrange=0&birthplace=co%20down%20ireland&page=1
this is my one and only subscription
where there is a single entry for Archibald McBride Ireland , no date of birth simple a tree holder named Steve

I tried before giving up
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1881/02820/2034497.pdf which records Archibald McBride son of Archibald m Eliza 3rd Aug 1881
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1870/03327/2219501.pdf
which records Marys birth 25 Oct 1870 with Father Archibald a sailor and present Sarah Tumelty    If a sailor rather than fisherman he might have been in Royal navy., another source?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1888/06191/4770283.pdf which records death of Archibald d @6th March 1888 a labourer aged 64  so b~1824  with Elizabeth his wife present, he had been ill for 6 months

now stopping my better half awaits me

Thank you for all the "Digging", this McBride family are certainly proving to be an elusive bunch, interesting to see a birth date for Henry, hadn't seen one previously. It is, however, Rose that puzzles and perplexes me, she is there on the 1901 Census and then simply disappears, been on every website and to Downpatrick Library without any success, I can't wait for the Covid restrictions to lift and I'll make a trip over to PRONI, also to St. Patricks in Portaferry to check their records although I think they may be sketchy, still, you have to keep going, Nil Desperandum as the Romans said !!!.

you sound more like Non Desistas  [I failed many latin exams!].  Nevertheless you inspired me to have one final look to see if I could find just one further line of enquiry
No McBride found in
https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/PT191213.htm#PORTAFERRY
https://www.lennonwylie.co.uk/PT191813.htm#Portaferry

the Valuation continuation books at PRONI Belfast for High St seemed a great idea to find what happened to Rose’s home after 1901
https://apps.proni.gov.uk/Val12B/RelatedVolume.aspx?6238
VAL/12/B/18/20D (1899 - 1908) contain on
page 82 old property  number 62 renumbered as  property  28  has Thomas McBride crossed out with Alex Brown replacing him date 1900
page 83 old property  number 67 renumbered as  property  30  has Samuel McBride crossed out  first with Mrs inserted, outer col in red 1906
then 2nd correction in blue Eliza {Landlord change in same line from John Lennon to Ellen
},outer column in blue 1907

 checking next volume
VAL/12/B/18/20E (1909 - 1919) which should show what happened to McBrides property, however revisons to numbering have taken place for High Street and become more complicated with the sudden division into odd numbers then even numbers I regret after some time I had to stop , if you have the time and energy to follow onwards please do so.

looking back to 1901 census just to make sure nothing has been overlooked
the District Electoral Division is Ards Upper containing High St Portaferry, Portaferry Quay, etc
High St Entries include
No 6 Lizzie McBride aged 25 living on her own but
married and wife , a extra handwritten explains she is the wife of Constable Daniel McBride RIC who is returned for census purposes on Form 4
No 17
17 in High Street (Ards Upper, Down)
McBride Thomas 36 Male Head of Family R Catholic Co Down Agricultural Labourer Read - Married -
McBride Sarah 36 Female Wife R Catholic Co Down Seamstress Read and write - Married -

McBride Rose 24 Female Daughter R Catholic Co Down Seamstress Read & write - Not Married -
McBride Archey 20 Male Son R Catholic Co Down Labourer Read &write - Not Married
looking back to 1911 census The DED changes to Portaferry
57 in High Street (Portaferry, Down)looks like No 27 in 1901
McBride Eliza 74 Female Head of Family RC Co Down - Read - Widow {Thomas}
McBride Archie 29 Male Son Roman Catholic Co Down - Read and write - Single - - - -
72 in High Street (Portaferry, Down) looks like No 17 in 1901
McBride Sarah 50 Female Head of Family Church of Ireland Co Down – Read&write - Widow {Thomas}- 24 13 8
and children McBride Archibald etc

have you seen the book eg
A guide to Portaferry and district : including a map of the town.
Imprint   [Portaferry] : Upper Ards Historical Society, 1980.

there appears to be/or has been a Portaferry family history group meeting at St James centre

have you found any connection to the parish priest Rev Francis McBride 1877-1909 at St Patricks Ballygalget Catholic Church, however I think that is about 4miles NE of Portaferry

some readers will be interested in https://www.familytreeforum.com/forum/research-advice/family-history-research/61769-mcbride-portaferry where you are yourself .leaving no stone unturned
good luck on your next visit

Yeah, it's complicated with the street numbers changing and also as numerous family members have the same Christian name, a lot of Sarah's and Samuels.
The Rose McBride I am seeking is the Daughter of Archibald and Eliza ( Tomelty ) McBride, Archibald is another elusive character, he is listed as "Mariner" on the marriage register but that is about all we know.

His Son Thomas married Sarah Coates who is another family member with little background other than I know that she was Cof I and turned when she married Thomas (1888 ) then turned back when he died in 1907. Her Father was Henry Coates but traces of the family I cannot find despite numerous enquiries over several years.

We keep trying, Nil Desperandum and all that.

Yeah, it's complicated with the street numbers changing ...

Do you mean the household numbers in the census? if so these are only the enumerator's numbers for that particular census and not the actual address. For example-
Eliza and son Archie in 1911 in household #57-
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Down/Portaferry/High_Street/241439/
Actual address is High Street (no number)-
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002234618/

You can check PRONI's Valuation Revision Books (free) to look up a property from the printed version of Griffith's Valuation (around mid 1800s) until c1930 to see if they did move into a different place-

Thank You, I haven't previously seen these, very useful but not sure that they will lead me to the extremely elusive Rose.
