Charmley in 1851/1841 / Cesus
« on: Tuesday 05 July 05 04:45 BST (UK) »
I am hoping that somebody might be able to look for the Thomas and Jane Charmley family somewhere in Chester or Little Saughall in the 1851 census.  They may also have a son, John, at that time.  John was born in 1851.

Thomas was born in 1822 and Jane in 1824.

Hi
Here they are in 1851, the 1841 is not a clear read so could not find them, but there was another family living 2 fields away who look  likely candidates for Thomas's family.

1851 HO107-2172-Folio598  Little Saughall Chester

Thomas Charmley head 28 farmer 32 acres Gt Saughall
Jane                      wife 26                            Ellesmere Shropshire
John                       son 7 months                 Gt Saughall

same page

Thomas Charmley head 57 farmer 72 acres Great Mollington
Martha                  wife 56                             Hawarden Flint
Elizabeth               daug 23 at home            Gt Saughall
Sarah                             21  ~
Richard                    son 19  ~
Eliza                       daug 17 ~
Joseph                     son 15 ~

the only other Charmley in the 1851 for the Chester area was this one, also a likely candidate for a member of the family.

1851 HO107-2172-F197  Brook St  Saint Oswalds Chester

William Charmley head 26 cow keeper Saughall
Elizabeth             wife 25                            ~
Thomas                son 4                        Flintshire
Joseph                       2 weeks              Chester

hope this helps

Thank you very much for the help.  I will offer to return the favor, if you ever need anyone looked up in Wisconsin, USA.  I am just starting to break the ice on learning more about my family from England.

What are the headers for this census, I have never actually seen what the pages look like and what info they were collecting.  Specifically, I was wondering if the town name listed at the end of the line is where they were born?  If so, then I would hope to see that in 1841 my younger Thomas Charmley would be living with the older Thomas and Martha in Saughall?

Thank you.

Hi
Yes the township at the end is the place of birth, these two links will give you all the info you need regarding the various census years etc.

As for finding Thomas junior at home with mum and dad in 1841, it is likely but it would not be uncommon at his age to find him working elsewhere. The easiest and most certain way to find confirmation of his fathers name would be to purchase his marriage certificate, I believe from the Cheshire BMD that he married Jane Jackson in 1846 at Shotwick http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/  you can purchase certificates from this site also.

The 1841 census is in parts very difficult to read and is not name indexed so it a long slog searching page by page, but I will have a closer look later and see if I can pick the family out.

regards

Thank you once again.  I actually already did order the marriage cert for Thomas and Jane, so I already know that Thomas' father was also Thomas and that Jane's father was John Jackson.

No big hurry searching for them in 1841.  I do appreciate your efforts on this.

Also, I am sorry to hear about the goings on in London today.

Thomas CHARMLEY and his wife Jane JACKSON are in my family tree as Thomas is my 4th great uncle as his brother John S CHARMLEY is my 3rd Great Grandfather.
If you have a family tree on ancestry.com, I would be happy to share a link. Cheers!
