1848 burial in parish register but no Civil/GRO death index found
« on: Friday 06 February 15 07:36 GMT (UK) »
At least....I haven't been able to find it so far.  Is this somewhat common? Considering registration began in 1837 I would have thought that by 1848 it would have been mostly followed?

The particular person I'm looking at is:
George Adamson
b. 1756 (Middleton Parish, North Riding Yorkshire)
buried 24 Nov 1848, age 92 (Ellerburn Parish)
Burial found in the Bishop's Transcripts of burials of Yorkshire via FindMyPast

I've of course looked on FindMyPast and FreeBMD. Is there another index site I should try? Or how would I go about verifying whether he has a death certificate or not?

FreeBMD - George Admanson Dec 1848 Pickering RD (covers Middleton) Vol 24 Page 284

Wow! Thanks!  I usually search for Adamson and Adams.  Never tried that combination!!

Took another look at FreeBMD and did figure out how you did that. I get so stuck in always using surnames that I forget to try other methods!  Thanks again!

If you are thinking of applying for a copy of his death certificate from the GRO, you must order it exactly as it is in the index ie Admanson, not as you expect it to be spelt.

If you order it as Adamson, there is a good chance you will get a 'no trace' refund.

Alternatively, you can order it from the local register office (which will cost more) and explain it could be either spelling. The GRO doesn't have that facility.

Thank you for the info!  I did actually already order it from the GRO. And I thought I had remembered advice like that so I did order it as Admanson.  The price from the GRO is really reasonable! So now I get to impatiently wait.  It was cheaper than almost all of the certificates I've had to order from other states here in the US.

The GRO should despatch within 5 working days if you used the reference number.

Then it's into the hands of the overseas postal services.
