Wow, thank you so much! We had wondered about the "French connection". I tried searching on ancestry for deaths in France but found nothing. He must have had some kind of accident, poor fellow. I have a photo which we believe to be him, but unfortunately last night my computer went on the fritz. I am using my daughter's right now. If I can't get my computer fixed sometime in the next week or so I will find it and scan it again, just so you can see what he looked like. Thanks ever so much again!

I found something more! I scrolled around and found some civil records for Granville. James Clegg's entry of death is there, though no cause given. They have a lot of detail and even include his parents' name (which is most useful as it confirms that his parents must have been some sort of cousins). Here is the link, it's on the left of the book. Thanks so much again. Now I will have to find out how to order a death certificate.

I am on holiday Stewart but wi-fi has reached the Antipodes

One of the sites is CG50 but it's a subscription site - something like 15 euros a year, very cheap anyway. It only covers Manche. The other site that covers Manche is www.archives.manche.fr but you need to know the commune or be prepared to trawl your way through an awful lot of records.

I managed to find a pic of the ship. It was built as the Comete, later named Granville. Interesting to see it! This is all so intriguing.
