William dickson adams
« on: Monday 09 February 15 20:56 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find out more about my ancestor William dickson Adams.  I believe he was born in Ireland in 1852.   There is a bit of a mystery regarding marriage, as I have a marriage in Lucknow India, in 1877.  But he was married to Agnes Adams ( maiden name was Adams, possibly related ) in 1889, they has two children in Ireland and then moved to glasgow where they had more children.  Family info has him dying in around 1905 but I have no evidence.  Any help appreciated as I have come to a deadend.

In the 1901 census for Scotland, he is a labourer aged 49 born in Ireland.  Wife Agnes D.Adams is aged 28, born in Ireland.  Her mother is living with them which gives you her maiden name:  Jane McGill, aged 49, born Ireland.

Son Albert was born in Belfast, so Northern Ireland, not Eire :)

Thanks Bev,  I have the 1901 census and I know Agnes maiden name was Adams as her father was James Adams.  Not unusual I belive for widows in Scotland and Ireland to revert to maiden names, therefore Jane adams reverts to McGill when living with her daughter, confused me at first!

William is the mystery in my family tree and have got no further with him than the brief details I have providesd.   I know about agnes and the children, she is my great grandmother, her youngest child being my grandfather, born during her second marriage after Williams ( we have assumed ) Williams death.

Actually, children Albert & Margaret were born in Belfast, Ireland (not Northern Ireland or Eire).
Both births are listed in the civil registration index/GRONI database with mother's maiden name Adams:
Albert Edmund Adams born 21 July 1890
Margaret Jane Adams born 5 Apr.1894
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks, I knew Albert was born in Belfast but you have helped to clear up where Margaret was born.  She was my great aunt I lived to be very old, so featured in my life as I was growing up.  I think William Adams was born in 1852, any hep with that would be appreciated.  We are not sure if he died in Ireland or Scotland because they had movd to Scotland but he may have gone back?

Hi

An on line tree has, William married, to a Maria Shean ,1871 Lucknow India  and then to Agnes Adams, 3 Nov 1889 Ireland

Due to the age gape, I would have thought William may have been married before

Do you have the marriage certificate for Agnes and William, who was William father and occ and the witnesses, what is Williams marital status

Just about to post the 1871 marriage for William Henry Harrison Adams-
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FGNP-QF2

The 1889 marriage certificate will give William's marital status (single/bachelor, widowed or divorced).

The 1905 death mentioned earlier-
William Adams, age 53, died 9 June 1905 Belfast registration district

Possibly matches with this William Adams?
