Moody, Ahoghill/Drumcrow, Antrim
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 12:01 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a baptism record for Thomas Patrick Sands Moody, the son of Mathew Moody (died 1903) and Nancy Hair Sands.  The family lived in Goonan, Ahoghill in 1901 and were Presbyterian. Thomas's place of birth on his army record is Ahoghill but there is no trace of him there. I have just located his POW record and this shows Drumcrow, Antrim.

Can anyone help with the location of Drumcrow - I've found a few locations with this name but not in Antrim.

Tks

GRONI online has the civil birth record, date of birth 14 December 1896, registered Ballymena District:

County Antrim has a townland called Drumcrow in the Civil Parish of Tickmacrevan.

Edited to add: See Tickmacrevan here -

Gaffy has posted a link to the map of Drumcrow which is about 3 miles inland from the town of Glenarm and close to the village of Carnalbana.  It is probably about 30 miles from Ballyconnelly where Thomas was living in the 1911 census:

Just a slight doubt in my mind about whether Drumcrow is correct.  I note that the townland beside Ballyconnelly is Drumraw.  Hope this is not an unnecessary red herring.

Hi Gaffy

Thank you so much for your replies.  It is great to have a confirmed date of birth for Thomas. I had tried the GRONI site before but didn't get a result using his full name. Now I have registered, I can search using the mother's name - I'm guessing this was your approach as there are a few Thomas Moody births in this time frame. The day and month for the one you found correspond with that on his POW record.

Much appreciated

Hi Glensman and Gaffy

Tks for the observations about the location of Drumcrow.  This is my first time researching in Northern Ireland so still getting familiar with the concept of townlands and local geography.

The only time Drumcrow crops up is in the Red Cross pow record so I was expecting it to be near Ahoghill which is the usual stated place of birth. Hoping the actual birth cert will help further.

Also, great links from you both - really helpful!

Hi Kingskerswell

Thank you so much for the marriage details for Mat(t)hew Moody and Nancy Hair Sands at Portglenoe.
Absolutely priceless and another area for me to look at - truly grateful. I have no ideal where the Moody line came from so this may be a clue. Hopefully his father's name will be on the marriage cert.

I was surprised they married in Church of Ireland as both families were stated to be Presbyterian!
