William MEDGETT b c.1778 Wingham Sarah ?Foreman b. c.1738 Ash
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 18:48 GMT (UK) »
I am lacking sources for the above couple. The info I have was posted on Ancestry.co.uk.
William appears to have married Sarah (was she Foreman?) and had children Frances b. 1811 and Thomas.
William's father is claimed to be William MEDGIT and Mary?  I seem to have hit a brick wall in trying to get any further BMD info on this branch.  Any pointers gratefully received.
I'd really like to know more about this Medget/Medgett/Medgit family - they seem to have emerged from nowhere. At first I wondered if the name had French/Walloon heritage - I tried Huguenot lists but nothing there!  :-\

There is a marriage at Wingham as follows:-

1800 Nov 22 William Medgett and Sarah Foreman by Banns

Witnesses were Sarah Chandler and Thomas Knight

One piece?  ???

Prior to the above there is a marriage at Adisham,

1773 Mar 19 William Medgett (of Woodnesborough) and Mary Elgar of the Parish.

Both signed by mark.

The witnesses were R Medgett and Edwd Medgett (both signed)

A possibility.  ???

According to the Wingham Parish Register Sarah Medgett was buried on 20 January 1816 aged 33.

Using this it appears likely that Sarah Forman could have been born at Wickhambreaux and baptised as,

1782 Aug 28 Sarah d/o Samuel and Elizabeth Foreman.

Preceding this there was a marriage, by Banns, at the same Parish as follows

1781 Oct 13 Samuel Foreman and Elizabeth Knight

Samuel signed and Elizabeth made her mark.

The witnesses were James Kennett and John Holman

Hope this helps.

The earliest Medgett (actually Meggett) sighting, in close proximity to Wingham, that I have seen is a marriage at Ash in 1694.  As a matter of interest that could be a double wedding with two Brett sisters, all rolled into one Register entry

Before that I have found a baptism at Sholden, not too far away, that again is spelt Meggett in 1667.

May be helpful.  ???

That is amazing Tony - why couldn't I seem to be able to track folk down like you? It must be that I was/am asking the wrong questions of the various databases! Are you using online sources or have you access to sources nearer the original?
Thank you once again for those leads, hopefully I can go further.....  ::)

Probably one of the best sources of original data online is the Canterbury Collection on Find my Past.  However, this collection specifically covers East Kent!  You can search it free of charge but to access the original images you will either have to subscribe, or buy credits.

Hope this is of use.

Just found your message.
Yes you can go back another four generations to Thomas Medgett married to Ann Harrison in Deal in 1662.
This is not the same Thomas Medgett born in Folkestone in 1630. Researchers on Ancestry think they are one and the same, but they can't be as both of them were buried at different times and different places.
The records are at Canterbury Cathedral Archives and many on Find My Past.
