Sarah Winn b 1822 in Slade Hooton, Yorks
« on: Friday 13 February 15 16:37 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the above lady on behalf of a technophobe friend. She appears to have got married  married c1850 to a Robert Turner. By the time of the 1871 census she is claiming to be the wife of a Robert Hardy and to have a 7 year old son of the same name though I can find no evidence of a marriage. There is an IGI record of the birth of a Robert Turner to Sarah Turner in the parish register of Tickhill St Mary in March 1864.
She seems to have died late in 1872 aged 50.
Does anyone have any further information on the birth of her son? Details of her burial possibly in Tickhill, Yorks? Detailsl of her death cert?

Welcome to Rootschat :)

You may have seen that in 1861 Sarah Turner is with parents William & Ann Winn (two Turner children also with her) in Tickhill, still claiming to be married. RG9/3513/28/24.

Perhaps she had separated from Robert Turner and was therefore not free to marry Robert Hardy.

You may also wish to investigate the possibility that Robert Turner and Robert Hardy were the same person, and that for some reason a change of name took place during the 1860s (though the apparent baptism of the son Robert as a child of a single mother may count against this possibility).

For what it is worth, I see that Robert Hardy (senior) was said to be unmarried, rather than widowed, in the 1881 census.

Robert Hardy b abt 1816 appears in Wakefield prison registers in 1878 and 1885 (drunk and disorderly).

In each case he is said to have an alias of Hibbert.

His birthplace is variously given as Bawtry and Tickhill, both close to Harworth which was the birthplace stated for him in the 1871 census you have found.

In 1851 he appears as Robert Hardy Hibbert, 36, unmarried, in Tickhill: HO107/2346/22/13.

So he is apparently not the same person as Robert Turner who married Sarah in 1850 (though frustratingly is not with her in 1851 or 1861, when in each case she is with her parents).

Freebmd & other sites can only provide the GRO references of register entries so that you can purchase a copy certificate, they don't give the details on them. You will have to buy the certificate @ £9.25 from GRO online for the full details.

The IGI ref for Robert's 1864 birth

If you can get to see the actual parish register it may have more information. The LDS films will be detailed here:

otherwise there may be a Local History section of Doncaster Library that has fiches or Doncaster Family History Society have CDs for sale.

& the Sarah Turner death you mention

Keep digging avm228!!

The 1850 marriage cert will give Robert's occupation which would make finding him in the censuses a bit easier. Shame it's not in W Yorks as ancestry have a lot of those parish records.

The 2 children avm228 mentioned in the 1861 were born Oldwater, Notts; William & Ann Winn's son George aged 17 was born there too. On the page is a John Winn aged 12 'son-in'law' born Oldwater living with a Roades family. This is where Sarah & her family are living in 1851. Perhaps this might give a clue as to where Robert snr is? Sarah seems to have travelled with her parents throughout. There is a large gap between Hannah ca 1853 & Robert 1864.

There are several trees on ancestry with Sarah variously married to Richard Turner, James Bland....none mention Robert 1864, although I see him in 1871 & Sarah has a 3 mnth old granddaughter.

This birth certificate would be need to prove Robert jnr's parents.
