The Ellis Island site (free) has Phillip Taylor FORD listed as crew member, steward, on two trips to New York.
Both in 1923...June 28 on board Canopic and Oct 20, 1923 on board Van Dyck.  Ages 22 and 23.
The latter states that he is to be paid off upon arrival in NY.
If this is "our" Phillip, and he stayed in the US, I'll look further at the 1930 census.

Hi everyone,

fantastic, thanks for all your input!!!

As far as I'm aware he was single when he travelled to the States.  Interestingly, the Ellis Island records mention the Canopic (which was a White Star liner) - this would tie-in as Philips two brothers had also worked as stewards on White Star liners (the Britannic and the Olympic) - the dates are also correct as he was born in July 1900, so in June and October 1923 he would have been 22 and 23 respectively.

He married Edyth (descent unknown although my father thinks she may have been of Polish extraction) where they settled and had at least one son (Peter, believed to have gone into banking).

Philips Social Security details are definitely those below as his son visited some distant relatives just after his father's death in 1968.

The information from Ellis Island sounds the most likely, but I'll take a look at the other links you've all posted.

Once again, thank you all for your kind help

Best Regards,

Rob

Rob,  looked at some maps for New Paltz...did not find a Ford Street but found Old Ford Road.  Just a quick google found 2 businesses --  one was a computer consultant and the other was a B&B --  B&B owners often know a lot of local history so maybe they will know origin of Old Ford Road --

or maybe you want to take a holiday and do some local research?
