Bakery Canterbury. Thomas William Wenham b. 1871 had a bakery and Tea Room. I have a photograph  of his son  James Thomas b. 1895, his successor, outside the shop. I would very much like to have the address of the Bakery. The photo was taken about 1930-1940ish. Can anyone please advise me of how to find out the address of the Bakery in Canterbury, Kent.
Many thanks and kind regards Meg

Hi Meg

The Local Studies Room at Canterbury library has Canterbury directories:

http://www.apps.kent.gov.uk/e&l/artslib/openingtimes/details.cfm?library_ref=8

and/or you could try posting a photograph to see if anybody recognises it .............. there are still a lot of old buildings in Canterbury although there was a lot of destruction in WW2.

Best wishes

In 1891 he is presumably apprenticed in Rochester.

In 1901 he is in Strood with his own accomodation - it doesn't say whether he is working "at home" and I can't read the street name!

You could try:

http://www.historicaldirectories.org/

You might be lucky and find him running his business.  Try using initials for his first name (e.g. T.W. Wenham)

Good luck!

T W WENHAM, baker, 19 Old Dover Road, Canterbury ???

Garnett's Canterbury & District Directory 1917/1918

http://www.historicaldirectories.org

I was hoping to find HOOLE next door but the same directory lists T N HOOLE newsagent at 39 Palace Street and Stephen HOOLE butcher at 8 Up. Bridge Street.

Something to work on .........

I know roughly where that is - I don't think there are any businesses up there now, but I can check tomorrow. Interestingly enough, this report from the Canterbury Archaeological Trust had a dig in Old Dover Road, and the map mentions No. 18.

Hi,

thank you, re: Thomas William Wenham, 19 Dover Road - 1917/1918

the photograph was taken much later, perhaps

 1. Hooles wasn't next to the shop in 1917/18
 2. my grt grandfather or grandfather James Thomas Wenham moved location?

James Thomas is in the photo with his wife Violet  next to him, not sure who the other lady is.

Meg

hi again,

I've been looking at a Canterbury site and it would appear that much of that part of the city had trouble with Hitler.

I very much doubt if the shop in the photo is still standing.

kind regards
merg
