Holyhead Police Station in 1850s
« on: Sunday 15 February 15 18:43 GMT (UK) »
My GGGrandfather Richard Ellis was Inspector of Police at Holyhead from about 1856 to about 1865. The police station was then somewhere on Newry Street but I have been unable to identify the building stood. Does anyone know exactly where it was situated?

An old map of Holyhead dated 1903 shows the Police station on Stanley St., at the top of Boston St. I can't think of anywhere on Newry St. where there could have been an older station ... except for a few shops, two chapels and the Town Hall, all the properties were private houses.

I was just looking at 1861 census for some relatives who lived at 15 Newry Street.

Happened to notice that 19 Newry Street was described as what looks like ‘Lock Up House’. Occupants are 2 ladies described in the census as ‘prostitutes’.

Your Police Inspector ancestor Richard Ellis and his family are also listed at 19 Newry Street over the page, so you’d need to scroll back to see the other occupants.

Thank you for thinking about my posting from a few years back.

My original enquiry was to try and find out the location on Newry Street of the Lockuphouse. The area was redeveloped in the 1890s and there do not appear to be any Ordnance Survey or any other maps prior to this date that would show its location. The numbers on the census are the schedule numbers rather than house numbers and with the redevelopment it has not been possible to do a like for like comparison with later census returns.

Thanks once again. I still hope to crack this puzzle one day.

I didn’t realise how old the post was until I spotted it!  Coincidence as I had pored over the handwriting, having wanted to see who my ancestors’ neighbours were! I hadn’t realised they weren’t house numbers. Good luck!
