Error message

I've just clicked the link from an email notification for a new reply to a thread I have contributed to and get an error message

"The topic or board you are looking for appears to be either missing or off limits to you."

When I checked my recent posts to find out which forum it was on, my message to the thread wasn't there. I contributed earlier this morning so I would expect it to be near the top of the list.
A search for the subject doesn't find it either. What's gone wrong?

The topic may have been removed. This can happen for many reasons - copyright breaches, arguments between members, topic removed by originator of the thread ... (there are probably others too).

Wouldn't moderators just remove those posts which breached forum rules etc (with a note added), but leave the rest of the thread?

Sometimes they just remove the offending posts, but not always - it seems to vary.

Do you remember who started the thread? You could send them a PM in case they were given a reason for the topic being removed.

sometimes topics are removed for editing the offending bits out and returned later (can take a bit of time to do)

No I'm afraid I can't remember. I just saw something half way through that I asked for a bit more explanation on.
