Detchon/Dechant
« on: Thursday 19 February 15 19:03 GMT (UK) »
Hello. This is my first post to RootsChat and I want to thank all of the volunteers for making this site possible.
I'm just now digging deeper into my English heritage. I have located on a 1750 map of Northumberland and area labeled Detchon. I think this area is now called Dechant. I would like to get as much information as I can on this area and my possible family connection.
Thanks again!
Detchon

Hi,
Welcome to RootsChat.
DETCHON and its variants are very common in Northumberland in the 18th centrury, in many parishes.
Are you interested in any particular parish? If so, some forenames might help.

Might be Detchant Farm near Belford. Who are you looking for? I have family who lived there.

I have found that William and Oswald are common names in my tree. It seems they are located between Rothbury and Elsdon. I had no idea that Detchon was so common. I have some sources but mostly what I have to go on is a county history from Ohio, USA. One says that a William Detchon owned a large estate near Elsdon. He would be my 6th great grandfather.

Thanks so much for your quick response!
Detchon

OK. If they were from the Rothbury or Elsdon area then you can probably ignore my suggestion about Detchant Farm near Belford. Do you think that William´s estate was actually named Detchon?

Sorry, I really don't know if the estate was even named. The history I have is rather vague. I came up with the Detchant Farm in some google searches too. I wasn't sure if there was a connection. The history also mentions that originally they were Huguenots but I have no other proof of this.

The earliest record that I have seen, that I am comfortable with is the christening of the William that I mentioned. It was 31 Mar 1717 in Rothbury. Others that I have seen seem to trace the line back alternating William-Oswald all around Rothbury.

Thanks for the link!
