Hughes and McShane Families
« on: Thursday 19 February 15 19:58 GMT (UK) »
To whom it may concern,

Hi,my name is Patrick luetkenhaus.I live in the state of Illinois,United states. My grandparents Mary McShane and Thomas Hughes. Were born in Coatbridge,Scotland. They both came to the united states in the early 1920s.The rest of the families stayed in scotland.
I  know that people from both families were buried at old monkland and stane cemetaries in coatbridge, scotland. They were born between 1830 and 1910.If there is anybody that can help me find the records  for both cemetaries.I would appreciate it.I have been having trouble   finding information.Thank you.
                                                       Sincerely,
                                                       Patrick luetkenhaus

Hi Patrick

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

We have a great community here of volunteers who have photographed a number of cemeteries and can make photos of stones available for free. See www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=510660.0  However, Old Monkland and Stanes are not included so far...

On a general basis, this is a great site to check for surviving gravestones that have been photographed and indexed:

Old Monkland www.memento-mori.co.uk/51.pdf

www.memento-mori.co.uk don't yet have Stanes Cemetery.

My grandparents were Hughes.  They came to the USA from Coatbridge, Scotland.  My grandfather stayed with Andrew McShane in Tacomy, Pennsylvania, before traveling to New York where my grandmother and their children later met up with him.  I am sure there must be a connection with our Hughes and McShane relatives and would love to compare notes.

Best regards,
Jessie

I've never heard of a Tacomy, Pennsylvania (and Google wasn't any help finding it) but there's an Andew Mcshane & family from Scotland who lived in Philadelphia area.
1930 census- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XH47-QKD
More details about the family here on Andrew's record-

One mystery solved- Owen Hughes, according to 1923 passenger manifest, going to friend Andrew McShane of 3624 Longshore St., Tacony, Pennsylvania.
Tacony is a section of Philadelphia-

Hi Agadowey,
Sorry for the typo.  My grandfather, Owen Hughes, went to Tacony, Pennsylvania, a site where many immigrants from Scotland landed.  There are a Monument to Scottish Immigrants and Irish Memorial there to commemorate the courage, skill, and tenacity of these immigrants.  From the ship's manifest on my grandfather's journey, I discovered his connection to McShane and his intent to stay with him but know very little of their time together.  Thank you for the link to Andrew's Find a Grave.  I will continue to see if I can learn more about the McShane Hughes connection.  It may help me learn about the early days of my grandfather's time in the USA.  I don't know what he did in PA or when he moved on to New York.  Thanks for the help!  I am attaching a photo of the memorial in Tacony.
