Alexander Robertson
« on: Friday 20 February 15 03:09 GMT (UK) »
Hello all, I'm hoping someone can help me with information on my g,grandfather Alexander Cobden Robertson. He was born abt 1843, not sure where but maybe Scotland. Married Matilda Cleary in Victoria in 1885 and died on 14 June 1931. He's buried (with his wife) at the new Ballan cemetery, Vic.  Any information would be great. There are several references to an Alexander Robertson arriving in Australia in the 1800's. Also several entries in Trove mentioning a couple of  Robertsons.
Hope you can help.  Thanks,
Sandiehawk.

Hi
Looking at the death indexes for Victoria Australia I can see
Alexander Robertson born 1843 died 1931 son of Thomas Robertson and Harriet White.

Possible baptism on Familysearch
Alexander Cockburn Robertson born 6.5.1843 bapt 2.7. 1843 Dalkeith Mid lothian son of Thomas Robertson.
Possible passenger list 15.9.1852 Europa Liverpool to Melbourne
Thos Robertson 52
Alexander 10
Mary 7
with Donald 30.Cath? 27 ,Duncan 2 and John 1 All Scottish.

There's a family tree online which has lots of photos
Thomas Robertson born 1800 wives 29.8.1824 West Linton  Peebles Christine White ,Mary Bain, and in Australia Harriet Jones

If it's them there is lots on there.

Thanks ciderdrinker, the name is Cobden on his headstone so I can see where there might have been confusion with that name.  Where is the family tree that you mentioned, is it on Ancestry or somewhere else?  I would love to look at it.
Thanks for your help so far.   Sandiehawk.

Hi
The tree is on Ancestry and should be the first of many. There is only one I could see
with the wife Matilda Cleary. No photos on this one  :( also the only one with the second name
'Cobden'.
Online trees should be treated with caution and the info verified ;)

Hi
Yes I know on line tree should be treated with caution but as this one did have photos I thought Sandiehawk could have a look and see if any of them looked familiar or struck a bell.
Obviously all information should be checked against original records.
As for the baptism I've only looked at the transcript ,not the original ,its possible the transcriber turned Cobden into Cockburn ,I don't know but thought it worth a mention.
The tree I noticed was this one.

http://trees.ancestrylibrary.com/tree/21978863/person/1188460712?ssrc=&ml_rpos=1

owned by caesiajcm.

I couldn't find a Thomas Robertson marrying a Harriet White as per the Australia death index but it seemed reasonable with this Alexander's mother being a Miss White and dying when he was about 5 that who ever filled in his death certificate might have mixed her up with the stepmother they remembered called Harriet.
I've checked the marriage and there was a Thomas Robertson marrying a Harriet Jones in Victoria in 1855 registration number 82.
I can see a death registration that would match the tree Mount Blackwood Victoria 1888 Thomas Robertson  age 88 father John .
Hart (Harriet) Robertson age 67 Myrniong Victoria 1891 daughter of Thomas and Grace Jones seems to be the stepmother.
Obviously it needs a bit of digging and Alexander's death certificate would perhaps add new details to follow up.
However looking at the map Ballan Cemetery and Mount Blackwood ,Myrniong all seem very local.
Some of Thomas and Harriet's children died  at Ballan.
James 1859-1927
David 1861-1935
William Henry 1858-1946 at Ballarat like Alexander in 1931
Cath Horsely 1861-1942 Footscray Victoria their married daughter is a bit further away. She and David were twins born 25 Dec 1861 bapt at St Peters Eastern Hills Melbourne .Father a farmer from Pentland Hills.
Their other child Harriet Ann 1856-1857 just says Victoria.
Have a look and see what you think.

Continuing the story of Alexander Robertson. I've just received his marriage cert today and it's not as much help as I hoped it would be.
It says he was born in Scotland and as his age on the certificate is 34 I presume he was born in 1851.
His parents are listed as Thomas Robertson, farmer ( I think ) and Harriet Robertson ( doesn't give her maiden name )
I still don't know as much as I had hoped such as when did he arrive in Australia and on what ship?
I've been in touch with the owner of a tree on Ancestry who has a large family of Robertson's in the same area here in Aus as my Alexander but it seems they are not related.
I will keep looking.
Sandie.

Thank-you all for your help. I just don't know where to look next for information about Alexander.
If his mothers maiden name isn't on his marriage cert then it may not be on his death cert either. Can anyone suggest where to go next or have I really come to a brick wall?
I've been in touch with the owner of the Ancestry tree  caessiajcm  and learned that he belongs to a large family of Robertsons who also came from Scotland and settled in the Myrniong area. My Alexander doesn't seem to belong to them however.
Regards,
Sandie.
