Hi MY60, welcome to rootschat  :)

How do you know George was born in Rothbury in 1765 - I don't see his baptism there

I am not sure that I have any evidence that he was born in Rothbury. Jane Smith definitely was. I think she was from Whitton and baptised in 1764 in Rothbury.
He was married to Jane Smith in September 1790 in Rothbury, with both described as resident at The Pike. They seemed to live at the Pike subsequently.

I can see Jane's baptism but even though George is resident in Rothbury at the time of his marriage it only means he's lived there a minimum of three weeks.

They obviously had children or they couldn't be your direct ancestors - do you have details and were any baptised between 1797 and 1812?  If there were any in this time frame then the baptism record should include where George was born.  Assuming all these activities took place in a C of E church

There were three children. Robert Carr born 31 July 1791; Ann Carr 6 October 1793 ; Christopher Carr  August 1795 . I can see names of parents, residence and date of baptism but not birthplace of parents. It would be very helpful indeed if George Carr's birthplace was also indicated but I was not aware this information was available on the record. Thank you so much for your help. If you know how I can access this information I should be very grateful indeed.

Unfortunately this information is only available from 1797 to 1812.  They are known as the 'Barrington years'.

A man called Shute Barrington became Bishop of Durham in 1797.  He was an amateur genealogist and he required the additional genealogical information on baptism and burial records.  It's a brilliant time for those of us who research in Northumberland and Durham but sadly the government standardised the records in 1813 and that was the end of that.

It's a shame they didn't have another child or two  :-\

Thank you for all your help. It is much appreciated.
Unfortunately I can find no further evidence of any other children born.
I dont think I am going to be able to trace back before their marriage in 1790 using baptism/birth records
However, George Carr must have been a tenant  of Duke of Northumberland first at Garley Pyke ( the Pike ) and on other farms in Rothbury Forest so perhaps there are records on Alnwick Castle estates for mid 18th century that might provide clues, if these are available.

Sadly, Alnwick Castle has its own archives and its own archivist and the records are not open to the public.

Will think about what can be looked at - George Carr is a very common name  :-\

Looks like I am at the end of the road ...George Carr is indeed a very common surname in mid 1700s in Northumberland. It will be very difficult to trace further back.
Thanks to you for all your advice and help though...much appreciated.

hi, I am in Northumberland right now following up the Detchon traces. I found a baptism record from the Rothbury parish register:
1675 7br [September]
Thomas (fit) [fathered] Oswold Ditchin gt tosson

The last bit was hard to make out, but I expect it was his home - Great Tosson.

Happy to share any info - particularly if MD3tch0n is still participating. I would send a private message, but I don't know how - I just signed up for this exchange!
