Mary Hobden of Barcombe Sussex
« on: Sunday 22 February 15 00:17 GMT (UK) »
This is my first post on RootsChat and therefore not sure where to post, so hopefully this will get to those who may be able to answer correctly.

In the Parish records of St Mary's of Barcombe there is a Baptism listed for Elizabeth HOBDEN on 28 Jan 1753, the daughter of Mary HOBDEN (Base born).

There is no father listed.  Would this imply she was a single mother? Also does anyone know what Base born means??

I'm trying to find if this Mary HOBDEN was the daughter of Richard HOBDEN 1702 & Jane TIPPIN (TIPPINGS)

Regards,
Bev from Australia (nee Hobden)

Hi bmsavill,
Welcome to Roots Chat!!!
The word base born means of illegitimate birth. This means the parents were not married upon the birth of their child. It is very possible that the father of the child left and she was a single mother.
Was Mary born in Australia? I'll see if I can find anything about her.
Cheers,
LH

Thanks LH, seems my instincts are correct.  No not Australia, Mary was born in Barcombe, Sussex also. She was baptised at St Mary's on 1 Apr 1727.  I haven't found a burial for her as yet, she may have married after she had this child?  Both her parents Richard & Jane Hobden were married, lived & buried also at St Mary's Barcombe.  Mary's daughter as I mentioned was also baptised at St Mary's.
Regards,
Bev

Mary Hobden christening: 1 April 1727, Barcombe, Sussex, England, father: Richard Hobden,
mother: Jane (IGI)

Elizabeth Hobden, christening: 16 October 1729, Barcombe, Sussex, England, father: Richard Hobden, mother: Jane (IGI)

Richard Hobden b 1731 Barcombe, Sussex, England, father: Richard Hobden, mother: Jane Tipping (He married  Elizabeth Sayers) (Not proven by IGI)

I can not see any evidence of Mary Hobden marrying in Barcombe in the IGI batch finder.

Hi Whiteout7,
I agree with all you posted.  In addition there is a Bapt for Elizabeth HOBDEN on 28 Jan 1753 (Base born) and this is the one I believe to be the illegitimate daughter of Mary HOBDEN b 1727.
Regards,
Bev
