L. Littlewood, 43 Rothschild St., West Norwood, London. SE 27

L. Littlewood, who's wartime address was 43 Rothschild St., West Norwood, London. SE 27  was  crew member of 487 Squadron's Ventura AE731 EG-O that was shot down by Hauptman Wickop crashing near Haarlem when participating in “Ramrod 16” attacking a power station near Amsterdam 3 May 1943.  This was a disastrous raid, of the 12 aircraft dispatched all were lost with the exception of one aircraft that returned soon after take off due to mechanical difficulties.

In Stalag Luft VI and Stalag 357 Littlewood along with my father Walter Layne and 5 other NCO s from their mess formed a combine for self preservation.  They pooled all of their resources as a group.  They would barter and scavenge for food and fuel and share the cooking responsibilities.

There are 50 prisoners named in my father's POW "Wartime Log."  https://wallyswar.wordpress.com/pow-log/

I am attempting to find a wartime photograph of each individual, so far I have found 23.  My efforts so far can be seen here.  https://wallyswar.wordpress.com/other-pows/

I am hopeful that through this website I can find a wartime photograph of L. Littlewood and hopefully a little more information.

Regards, David Layne.

I think he was Leonard Littlewood, with parents Herbert Isaac and Maud Elizabeth Littlewood.  Siblings Albert Charles and Sidney Herbert Littlewood.  Leonard was born in 1920 (June qtr, Lambeth).

The 1945 electoral roll at that address has a Leonard J Littlewood.

He's mentioned in this 2004 news item http://www.newsshopper.co.uk/news/554351.print/, signing prints of a painting of Operation Oyster. There is a phone number to call for more information, also an invitation to contact the RAF Benevolent Fund.

Hi David,

This is all very interesting - I believe Leonard Littlewood is my Great Great Uncle.

I think he was Leonard Littlewood, with parents Herbert Isaac and Maud Elizabeth Littlewood.  Siblings Albert Charles and Sidney Herbert Littlewood.  Leonard was born in 1920 (June qtr, Lambeth).

Albert Charles was my Great Grandfather. It would be good to hear about anything more you have on Leonard and his Squadron. Reach me on here or I can give you my email address.

Best,
Dan
