Dorcas Cavanagh/Kavanagh - Cavan - help please with parish records
« on: Monday 23 February 15 22:09 GMT (UK) »
Dorcas Cavanagh wass my g.g.grandmother who I believe was born about 1842 in Cavan. These details are from census entries. I've seen the name spelt in both ways, on her marriage certificate it is spelt Kavanagh.

If anyone could find details of her birth/parents in Cavan I would appreciate it very much. I know she ended up in Edinburgh where she married John McEvoy of Derry, but I have no idea if she came over with him or met him after leaving Ireland.

Any details would be much appreciated, thanks.

McEvoy, Cavanagh - Ireland

Does her Scottish marriage certificate not give details of her parents? Unfortunately Dorcas was born well before the start of birth registration in Ireland so you'd need to find a baptism in church records (if it exists) but in order to do so you'll need to have a more exact place than the county.

:D lol aghadowey you're right of course - went back and checked the paperwork and for some reason didn't enter Dorcas' parents into the tree when I entered John's in. I think it may have been because I couldn't read it properly, all I can read is Bridget. But I'm no further forward because I still don't know where in Cavan she came from. Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

Dorcas Kavanagh was my g grandmother. born about 1842 in Caventown  Ireland. her father was John Kavanagh and her mother was Bridget Divine born about 1815 in Caventown Ireland. Don't know anything before that. My father was William McEvoy born Edinburgh 2nd Feb 1912. I'm curious as to where you fit into the family tree.

Hi Maureen - you can't believe how excited I am to get this message  ;D ;D ;D

My grandmother was Beatrix Thomson McEvoy, son of William Henry Montgomery McEvoy.

I have information that tells me that Dorcas Cavanagh/Kavanagh came from Cavan, and was married to John McEvoy from Ireland, but have never been able to find anything on their families.

Where in the family do you sit?

Hi again Maureen - sorry, just reread your message and realised that you must be a cousin to my father! His mother was Beatrix, b 1918, younger sister to William, b 1912.

Hi Sue
Beatrix was my aunty Trixie . Which means you must be the daughter of either Andrew or John Keddie. I never knew them But my mum used to mention them. Maureen

Hi Maureen - yes I'm Andrew's daughter! I never knew any of his family well as we rarely went to Scotland.

I see that was your second post - once you have made one more post we will be able to PM and I will send you my email address.

I would be really happy to know more - my Dad doesn't know much about his Mum's family and trying to trace the Irish connection has been just a bit difficult   ::) I can't wait to tell him that I've bumped into another of his cousins - I met someone by chance in Galashiels a few years ago who turned out to be his second cousin  :)
