even more children
« on: Sunday 01 March 15 01:05 GMT (UK) »
On his hospital records my great  grandfather was listed as 1 of 12 children (9  of whom were still living in 1920)
His mother died in Russia a month after giving birth to an unbaptised child
 I thought I'd identified 10 other names
But a 1920 US census showed  his father's 2nd wife down as having 6 children 3 surviving
I already had 3 dead Russian babies with 1st wife ...so maths no longer added up .
He must have had 18 children altogether  So I now have 3 more full siblings and 2 dead half-siblings to find (probably born in manchester between 1892-1897 or liverpool 1898-1903...maybe in New york after 1905).
Might have to dig up some previously discarded data

yes joy + sami ; i'm excited about it . Reminds me  "The more I find out the less I know".
It's a truly amazing journey considering the only clue we had to start was my grandmother's middle name (which turned out to be her birth father's surname) never expected to go back 3 generations in Russia + have  "family" in USA

I guess that's what makes it such an absorbing hobby - you never know where you are going to end up - or start from for that matter  ;D

has anone else come across 1910 US or 1911 UK census where the number of children born and surviving only refers to the  2nd wife not  the number born to the father ?  It is logical but was it the common interpretation ?

Hi,

The information given particularly on census is only as good as the informants knowledge.  Immigration dates, birth years, number of children, ages etc can all vary - its frustrating but not uncommon   ::)

I know exactly what you mean!
I started a friend's tree on Thursday, because his father is over for a visit and we can ask him lots of questions.

This morning I have found that hos 3G Grandmother had 3 husbands - and children by all 3!
There's also another couple showing in censuses that I can't confirm yet!

I suppose I should say she had children by (at least!) 3 different men?! Only 1 marriage found so far! :-\

Museum Library, and access to records, will be open tomorrow.
Wonder what else I will find?! ;D

Found exactly the same late last year - One marriage only for the "lady" - as the second wife of a labourer. (She'd already had one child "in her own right" as it were.) She had children with him - later appeared with another man, had children with him - and finished up with a third. Can't find marriages beyond that first one.
There must have been something in the water.....
