MOCROFT
« on: Sunday 01 March 15 19:08 GMT (UK) »
As far as can be seen all Mocrofts descend from Alfred Mocroft who was born Alfred Morcroft born in 1829 in Derbyshire. When he came to the Midlands around 1853/54 he dropped the "r". He is from the Morecrofts of Derbyshire possibly Potters. I would like to hear from anyone descending from Alfred Mocroft.

Alfred was b Derbyshire which is in the Midlands????

Do you mean he was b East midlands and went to West Midlands 1853/4???

Also is it not possible Mocroft was just a transcription error ?

1861 census he is Moorcroft
1871 Mocroft
1881 Moorcroft

there is a burial 14 Apr 1888 Brierley Hill Alfred Moorcroft????

In my family the surname was constantly mistranscribed -so much so that one great uncle married 3 times each time his surname being spelt differently
I have cousins near to where I live and they kept one of the mistranscribed names

I am sorry I did mean to put the West Midlands as you correctly say Derbyshire is the East Midlands.

Mocroft may have been an error initially (maybe due to accents), However everyone who came from him, who I have found so far, including my Grandmother have used Mocroft not Morecroft.

Yes he was Morecroft when he married then from there it was Mocroft.

I have also about 9 spelling for one of my surnames, I think this is more unique that the name adapted to the surroundings and is still used as Mocroft today. However, all the relatives in Derbyshire still use the Morecroft/ Moorcroft surname. In The West Midlands it is said as Mocroft.
