Thomas Best
« on: Tuesday 03 March 15 06:58 GMT (UK) »
Emigrated from England sometime between April 1861 and sometime in 1862; arriving in Adelaide South Australia prior to August 1862.
Single man, aged about 26 (+/- 2 years), Bible Christian minister born and raised St Austell Cornwall (St Dennis parish) - cannot find him on any passenger ship to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney or into Tasmania.
Can anyone enlighten me how and when he travelled?

Can I ask how you are so sure of the 1861/1862 dates? And what are the names of Thomas's parents?

Thomas appears in the 1861 census (I am advised that this was taken 6th/7th April) in Gloucestershire as a visitor and a Bible Christian minister; and, he is mentioned in an archived newspaper article in South Australia in August 1862. Parents are John Best and Nancy Best (nee Stephens). He also has siblings John, James, Jenefer (sic) and Richard.

The previous post is mine also. Found him in England and found him in Australia but can't find him getting from England to Australia.

Interesting! I have him in Marion SA 11/8/1862 (Trove archive). I will double check my facts. 'Teacher' is a pretty good fit and the Teague connection may be another cross reference. I was sure I had gone through all the ships and of interest, not too many from Plymouth to Australia. Wasn't looking at Ancestry though.
