1851 census - where is Tynemouth workhouse?
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 09:40 GMT (UK) »
Apart from trawling through the whole of Tynemouth, can anyone tell me where the workhouse entries are on the 1851 census?

I have tried the address fields on Find My Past and "inmate" on Ancestry.com but cannot find the census entries.

Finding workhouse and asylum entries on ANY census is always tricky but maybe someone has found an 1851 entry in the past and could tell me the folio and page numbers.

From Genuki

Poorhouses, Poor Law, etc.
•Tynemouth Parish was part of Tynemouth Poor Law Union. The Union Workhouse was located in Preston Lane, North Shields. Some useful records are held at Tyne and Wear Archives Service.

Thank you Stan, the reference took me straight to the correct pages. The map is good too, showing the Workhouse just north of Christchurch.

Thank you also Crooner, useful info.

I'm looking for records of inmates/staff at the workhouse for around the years 1850 - 1870, is there a link to the workhouse records? My family search name is Barrass and they were in the workhouse around that time, wondering why? Thanks

I don't think you'll find any of the Tynemouth Workhouse records freely available online.

What records there are are held at Tyne and Wear Archives in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Go to https://twarchives.org.uk/collection/user-guides-and-information , click on Paupers records and take a look at the entry for Tynemouth Poor Law Union.

General information about Tynemouth Workhouse is available on Peter Higginbotham's website

I have found info for the 1851 Census with inmates of the Workhouse listed. One of my relatives, Jane Barrass, is listed as a "Widow of James Barrass, Coalminer" It is from MyHeritage Census Records, not sure if you can see the page if you are not a member? There are about 270 names on there, if you cant access the url I am very willing to look up any names that you want to find on there.
Hope this is ok?
