Nottingham Board
« on: Wednesday 04 March 15 20:16 GMT (UK) »
I was advised to send this message to the Nottingham Board.I am a beginner so if my message repeats itself or is on the wrong board please excuse me.My message is that I wish to find out what my Grand Father and Grand Mothers full names are .I have found all of their children but the information on my Grand Parents only gives their last names. My Grand Father was Marshall and my Grand Mothers maiden name was Williamson. This is not helpful as I cannot go any further back on my research. The only information I have is that there were four children John Henry Marshall Born 1914.Elizabeth.L Marshall born 1917.George Marshall (My Father) born 1924 and Clara Marshall born 1921.I have traced all of them but I only get Mothers maiden name Williamson. All born in Nottingham. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.As I now live abroad it is difficult for me to get any info  John-David

A copy of your fathers birth cert would give their names.
If you haven't got that, or cant get it from your father or any of his descendents, then you can send for a copy from www.gro.gov.uk. First look it up on freebmd to get the reference number.

You coud try just looking for a Marshall/Williamson marriage on freeBMD, at the right time in the right area, but that would not be so reliable, especially if there was more than one!

Just seen your latest post - you have tried that one!

The birth certificates for the children should list both parents. With that information you can search for the correct marriage certificate, probably find the family in census records, etc.

Just remember not to post details of living, or possibly living, people.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the info but it is not so easy trying to get a birth certificate for my Grand Parents names.I have contacted many of my living relatives and they also cannot help.I contacted Nottingham to obtain a Birth Certificate for my Father (now deceased) but because I live abroad it really was not easy to obtain a copy.I guess I could find the info on Ancestry.com or Findmypast.com but I cannot really do that at the moment. The only way is that when I return to England I can obtain a copy from the town hall in Nottingham.I was just hopeful that maybe someone on this site may have known some of my past relatives or could give an alternative to getting the info I need    John-David

Hi

What does it say on your parents marriage certificate?
When/where/fullnames/address(es)/fathersnames?

What physical documentation do you actually have? Real documents?

John Henry Marshall's birth was registered in the Basford district in q3 of 1914.

You mention a possible marriage in 1918. If this was the marriage then obviously John Henry would have been illegitimate. In that case I would expect his birth to have been registered with his mother's surname; he could also have been registered as Marshall if his father was there at the registry office and was happy to be named as father, but in that case he would be indexed twice -- once as Williamson and once as Marshall.

There's no John Henry Williamson registered in Basford which would lead me to think that the 1918 marriage isn't the one you want.

As mentioned above, the safest thing to do is to send away for a birth certificate; you will get both parents' names and then we can look for the marriage. Otherwise it's nothing more than guesswork. Use the info above to order it online from the gro.org site.

I don't think there's any way around this. The Nottingham FH CDs don't go up into the 1900s so no-one is going to be able to do any lookups from those for you for this info.
