Obituary from Kensington, London from 1948 and 1957?
« on: Thursday 05 March 15 16:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone - I would love some direction in where I should start to look for obituaries for 2 family members who died in Kensington in 1948 and 1957.  I'm new to London research. Thanks so much, Cara

Are you wanting indications as to which papers the obituaries might have been posted in?

Are you sure that they would have had obituaries written?

Was the family local to Kensington for several years?

Just wanted to know what you are looking for. :)

Good point. Sorry I didn't include more info. Yes Herbert and Clara "Holt" Cleeve were married in Kensington in 1904. She was American and he served in the British Army. Herbert died on July 15, 1948 at 77 yrs old and Clara died on July 27, 1957 at 90 yrs old. They are buried in Brompton Cemetery. I recently obtained a copy of Clara's will and it mentions a niece that I didn't know about - Jean Cresswell. I think Clara's younger sister Sarah got married in London as well and had children. I'm hoping an obit might help me figure that out. I would love direction on what papers to check out. Also any other tips. I think they were fairly well off. Clara and Sarah inherited money after their parent's passed away. I would also love to look for a picture of either of them in any society related publications. Would his military records include a picture? Thanks again - Cara

Do you have the findagrave notice?
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=72397740

She was Clara Frances Holt Cleeves and her sister Sarah.A.Holt

Do you know what the A in Sarahs name means, it might help.

Sometimes you find obituaries in https://www.thegazette.co.uk/ but I can't see anything obvious
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

Yes that is my Find A Grave posting. The wedding announcement was my first clue they left the US. I believe the sister is Sarah Ann but she was also listed as Sadie on one census. Thanks for the info on the gazette.

Normally I would say many people just do not have obituaries published in the the newspaper. Your family seems to have the profile of those who have their obituaries in the London Times. Available at some libraries.

This is the only death registration I can see in 1957 but it does not mention any middle names and the age is wrong  :-\

September qtr 1957
Clara    Cleeve
age 85
Kensington    5c   859

I can't see anything in The Times for her , no obituary there for Herbert either.

There is a tree on Anc..try [ BKGENIE / BrooklynGenealogist ]
which has a Clara Frances Cleeve (widow of Herbert d 1948) d27/7/1957
and her death certificate.

?
That death certificate says she was cremated.

Clara born 31 Aug 1866 in Providence, Rhode Island

When Herbert & Clara returned to Southampton 19 May 1936 the couple entered before them were Frederick Willets Cresswell & Maude Winifred Cresswell. They were returning to Lexham Gardens W8 - which I think is Kensington. He was 70 she was 58.

It was probably a coincidence as the names were almost listed alphabetically but worth investigating I would think.
