Help please with 1687 Inventory
« on: Friday 06 March 15 11:20 GMT (UK) »
I have an Inventory to a Will of 1687 for one of my ancestors who was a yeoman farmer.  The last entry appears to say:  "Chattle Lease" and the value is £450 out of a total for the Inventory of £676.  Can anyone please tell me if I am likely to be reading it correctly and, if so, what it means.

Thanks

Hi, chattel was an item of movable property ie furniture / animals ie not land /buildings so I suspect as a farmer this would be the meaning here.

Agree with Diddy.

The word "chattel" and the word "cattle" are, etymologically speaking, the same word.

Thank you both for this.  There is a problem in that a large number of animals and the house furniture is listed separately in the Inventory.  What is not listed is any land or house.  I think perhaps I have read it wrongly although it does look very much like Chattle Leasse.
Thanks again

he may not have had his own property but rented the farm as did my Legg ancestors in Yorkshire. They employed a lot of men / were quite wealthy but didn't have their own farm.
