If you buy the marriage certificate you may even find that it says Samuel John and that it is a transcription error on the index or maybe the clergy got it wrong but it is still signed as Samuel.

am on it now...sort of. Found a Samuel John in the 1891 census living in Lambeth which is right next to Battersea which is in Wandsworth. Born 1881 so that must be him

I formatted the Census finding for you in my 1st posting .... dont worry about a year or two - it matches well to his FreeBMD Birth Index entry ... and he is consistant about PoB being Battersea in 1891, 1901 & 1911
