I said it was confusing ;D  I find the maps really interesting, but as to whether I could link them up with a specific event such as where the body was found..... Glad you found interesting

Plenty of contemporary maps at http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/ndx5to40.htm

The grid system is straightforward once you get the idea - see http://www.1914-1918.net/trench_maps.htm

The reference leads you to a square 50x50 yds - not precise enough to pinpoint a location, but enough to find the rough spot.

Thanks. I've bookmarked those pages in the hope when I go to Arras later this year that I might be able to find stuff!

Hi Newburychap,

Many thanks for the trench map links, very much appreciated indeed.

I came across this thread regarding Andrew Arthur Hemmings, who you say is distantly related to. I'm searching for a A Hemmings who is commemorated on the Castle Bromwich (Birmingham) war memorial. I know Andrew was born in Nechells, Birmingham and died in France in 1918, but I can't him to the naming on this war memorial. Do you have any futher information?
Kind regards
Alan

I'm sure David will be along soon but I thought I'd take a look out of interest.
I notice in 1911 he's aged 17 & living in Long Acre which is only 5mls. from Castle Bromwich.
He married Sarah A Lovell in 1916 & it is she who receives his war gratuity after his death.
Although it only says A Hemmings on the Memorial it's difficult to see how it could be anyone else.

Thanks Jim for the reply.
I've traced the history of all the others commemorated on the Castle Bromwich War memorial lost in the great War. So just A Hemmings, but can find no direct link to the village. I thought perhaps his occupation would have been a link but can't see anything as yet.

I've found links to a particular village can be quite vague.
It was up to the individual to put the name forward for inclusion.
If it was his widow she may have been living close by. It may also have come from another family member.
